Why do people park like this?!

I’m sat in a virtually empty car park, maybe 50 spaces with 2 other cars in
a car just pulled in and parked next to me, so close that I can’t open my passenger door Confused
i nearly opened my window to say “your car doesn’t need company!”

It’s fucking odd isn’t it?

Move a space or two along

vieve26 · 07/05/2026 09:04

It’s not even the closest space to the door or anything

On previous threads excuses have been
"Its easier to park"
"So your car wont get broken into"
"So someone doesnt scratch my car parking"
"Its safer"

vieve26 · 07/05/2026 09:11

It’s not showing how close they are really but

Happened to me today lol no child spaces no bother I parked a bit away, a car pulled up beside me before I was able to get out & get the car seat out

Skyflier · 07/05/2026 14:39

Happens in the cinema too. Can be the only person there and someone will come and sit in front of you. Drives me crazy!

TheFifthTellytubby · 07/05/2026 14:46

I'd just drive to one of the many empty spaces on the far side of the car park. See if they follow... 😁

Biggles27 · 07/05/2026 15:08

I feel your pain - happens so often! An empty car park & they park right next to me - and always really close

baffles me, it really does. Why? Just why!

AtomicBlondeRose · 07/05/2026 15:13

I’ve posted before about being on a beach with absolutely loads and loads of room for everyone, choosing a space that was far away from anybody so we could stretch out and relax, and a family coming and sitting so close to me their son was sitting ON MY BAG 😂

No I didn’t say anything, they were scary and the dad was swigging cider so we just moved!

Wauwinet · 07/05/2026 15:31

If I’m in my car and someone parks next to me I immediately pull out and move to another spot away from them. They almost always look sheepish. 😂

FettchYeSandbagges · 07/05/2026 15:52

I reckon they must see you all alone in an otherwise empty place and think:

"Aha!! They have obviously chosen the very best spot <for reasons> so I'll get as close to them as possible, because obviously I am more important than they are".

Ilikewinter · 07/05/2026 16:17

Yes happened to me last week. I'd gone to get the ticket and I had to wait whilst a woman was unloading her 3 kids out of the car, telling them to hurry because 'the lady is waiting' before I could open my drivers door. I then got in and promptly moved to another spot!

The parking thing is ridiculous, but I kind of get it. But what kind of psycho wants to get close to strangers on an empty beach?!

I used to commute by tram so early there were only two or three of us waiting on the platform. Every morning a woman would nervously hover about wherever I was standing - different spots on different days - and then try and edge in front of me when the tram arrived.

That was over a decade ago but the memory still annoys me!

I've done that a couple of times. They didn't look sheepish, they just looked as if I was odd. Well maybe I am, but then quite a few of us on this thread are :)

SirChenjins · 07/05/2026 18:07

It's so weird, isn't it? I'd love to know the answer to it. Probably the same people who use the next loo to you even though there are 20 others free, or sit inches away from you at the very next table even though the cafe is empty 🤷‍♀️

Disturbia81 · 07/05/2026 18:12

I don’t get it either. I do the opposite in car parks, buses, trains, cinema.. head for the empty ones. I wonder if it’s an introvert extrovert thing
