Do others find YouTubers false and their content oddly manipulative?

I want to come on here and raise a topic of youtubers. I believe them to be false. I dont understand how anyone can document their life for anyone to watch. People can message them in the comments and they will message back they are doing so to hook people into subscribing in order to get more viewers. They start off on their video by saying hello friends. I find that totally false. They draw you in and you watch them and thinking you know all about them. I started watching one but got so fed up of the boring content that I stopped watching. Its just a false of entertainment for daddy's and vulnerable gullible people who should go out and get a life.

Agreed

Attention seekers are usually insecure

You’re seeking attention yourself with every thread.

Your many threads rarely ask for actual advice. You usually just want to tell everyone how horrible someone or something is and then you’re rude and aggressive to people who don’t agree with you.

You are absolutely seeking attention and validation.

The difference is nobody knows who o am on here. A content creator uses their real name and puts videos up of themselves so they are not anonymous.

Influencers and vlogs aren’t for me but they are the equivalent of older people watching soaps when they were growing up.

They are making (or aiming to make) money hence the manipulation. Most people aren’t 100% honest about their lives and I wouldn’t expect vloggers and influencers to be the same imo. It’s like how some assume that celebrities in real life are going to be like their public personas when it’s fine that they have an act aimed at public audiences and another in private.

Yes, but I am doing it anonymously.

I heard one creator say they dont nake much money out of doing vlogs. They do it to share their journey with others to help then

Nobody is forcing you to watch anything, just turn it off.
Who cares if there are people making money on youtube - good for them.

@PerkyOchrePeer, what is the benefit to you of coming on here so regularly to vent aggressively about real life friends and acquaintances, hairdressers, GPs, and now YouTubers, always because they’ve transgressed some arbitrary rule you’ve invented — like someone who showed you around on holiday has to keep responding to your WhatsApp’s indefinitely, or anyone who’s offered a holiday souvenir must accept it or be labelled a bad friend because of your rigid thinking?

A YouTuber addressing their followers as friends or responding to them in comments isn’t being literal, or, for that matter ‘false’. They are not pretending to be your actual RL friend. They’re just monetising content, same as TV, same as Mn.

Why continually start arguments with thin air? Isn’t it exhausting being this permanently negative?

I don’t know who the Oxford DPhil blogger is, but people who do doctorates at Oxford, or indeed anywhere, are perfectly normal people. They do other things as well. You’re not disbarred from musical talent because you’re a doctoral student!

FlatErica · 16/05/2026 17:36

The YouTubers I follow aren’t anything like that. Atomic Shrimp and Max Miller, for example. It’s your choice to watch influencers.

cramptramp · 16/05/2026 17:38

No. You’re watching the wrong things on YouTube if you get people saying ‘hello friends’.

Why bring music into it? I had two uncles who did PHDs and when I was at school they asked if I was going to university. I said no abd they said I would get a better job if I did. I started work at 20 in a steady job and am still working 40 years later. I have never been made redundant because I work in a secure job where redundancies dont happen and I get a very good work pension. All uni does is leave you with student loan debts unless you come fro. A wealthy family where they can make sure your fees are paid for

Some are, some aren’t.

My niece (24) is an influencer. Not via YouTube, but TikTok. It’s her ft job and she makes a good salary (c250k). Her content is not very honest to put it mildly. She gets no negative comments whatsoever. Not one. Her followers see her lifestyle as aspirational and have no clue about the real story. It works for her and she’s entrenched at this stage.

She is lying abd that is wring. If you are an influencer then at least be honest

Yes, I find all YouTubers false. All of them.

I also think all books are boring.

And all songs are repetitive.

And all posters on MN are a hive mind.

And countless other ridiculous over-generalisations that couldn't possibly be true.

I spend hours on YouTube. Don’t recognise your complaint. Why would anyone watch or subscribe to something they didn't appreciate and value? If you’ve been sucked in to vacuous stuff that’s on you. Leave me to my historians and cooks and travel channels.

You're the one who brought music into it!

You said (of the Oxford vlogger you mentioned)

On the other hand, j probably do things she is not capable of doing. I can play 2 musical instruments. Can she maybe she can but we will never know because we only see a fraction of these people's lives

That's also nonsense about university necessarily leaving you with student loans. From 1962 to 1990 (and if you have worked 40 years since the age of 20, this applies to you), there were grants available to cover full tuition fees and maintenance. Only after 1990 did government policy start shifting towards loans.

I have four degrees and paid for them all with a combination of grants and scholarships, plus the usual PT and vac jobs. My parents are poor.

I mean, fine if you chose not to go to university, it's not compulsory -- but you didn't not do it at the time when you would have gone because of worrying about student loan debt.

If you place so little value on higher education, why were you watching a YouTube video about studying for a PhD?

Because I am not totally against learning because ive done several evening classes, and like the idea of watching people who like to learn.

Ive met people who have said why do an evening class, I stopped studying the day I left school

I mean, I thought everyone knew this already? do people think YouTubers are doing it because of their love for their (completely anonymous) audience?- they're doing it for the cash, of course they are. End of.

I watch some YouTubers of an educational nature but the idea of watching some random person just living their life is utterly bizarre to me- why would I care how someone else lives, thats so boring to me.
