Do others find YouTubers false and their content oddly manipulative?

I want to come on here and raise a topic of youtubers. I believe them to be false. I dont understand how anyone can document their life for anyone to watch. People can message them in the comments and they will message back they are doing so to hook people into subscribing in order to get more viewers. They start off on their video by saying hello friends. I find that totally false. They draw you in and you watch them and thinking you know all about them. I started watching one but got so fed up of the boring content that I stopped watching. Its just a false of entertainment for daddy's and vulnerable gullible people who should go out and get a life.

Agreed

I’m still struggling to see your point with this thread. I understand that you don’t like or approve of vloggers, which is fine. But then what is there to discuss?

I wanted to find out if others found them silly and boastful. We all know people are clever but to sit and brag online and brag js a whole nother level. Its the same as people show their baby taking their first step. Who cares. We dont know them. Its very wrong to boast. My take on it is that these are quite shallow people who are attention seekers

YouTube is vast and there is so much content on there that you will never see if it isn't something you are interested in.
I don't recognise your description of You Tube at all from my own experience.

I currently have an unlisted technical video open about a piece of software I own that has just had an update.
It's genuinely useful to me and a great way to have contact with the team who make that software if I have questions, although I usually do that in their Discord.

Most of my YouTube is software related channels, a couple related to numismatics, with a few art or gaming channels and some comedy thrown in.
I don't think a single one of them has ever begun a video with "Hello Friends"

You are getting suggestions for videos based on the ones you do watch.

If you don't like those suggestions, search for things you do like and watch those videos, or click on the button underneath the thumbnail on your homepage to stop videos from those channels being suggested to you.
Or just don't go onto YouTube.
It's not compulsory if it's not for you.

You’ve only mentioned one specific YouTuber and that isn’t my reading of her at all. I don’t really watch her much these days but I’ve seen many of her previous videos.

Honestly you sound a bit intimidated by or jealous of her.

There are lots and lots of people on YouTube I dislike. I simply don’t watch them.

WinterFrogs · 06/05/2026 12:56

Well, like books, podcasts, radio, tv and any other entertainment, you choose to engage, or not. I prefer to listen or read, so that's what I do mainly. Dh and I sat and watched some Queen videos on YouTube yesterday evening so it has it's uses ( for us) Tutorial are quite handy too.
Are you looking for discussion?

OriginalUsername2 · 06/05/2026 13:42

I don’t follow anyone like that. My algorithm primarily gives me illustrators and writers because that’s what I engage with and they’re all genuine, helpful people enjoying their jobs and sharing knowledge as an extra income stream. Not one of them does the whole “like and subscribe!” thing.

You can make YouTube your own more than you can on any other platform. If you click “not interested” on any videos that bother you and actively search for what you really want it learns quickly.

It's entertainment

Like watching TV used to be

no big deal

Exactly.

I watch a woman from Kazakhstan who lives on a farm and uses a lot of her produce for her recipes. I love her cooking, and I note her recipes. Even if it's faked in some fashion, I observed the process for myself and enjoy watching it. No biggie.

I'd be interested to know if you have the right person as there are more than one youtuber who post OHD stuff. Im not jealous at all because her content is not something I wpuld pursue. I am anameauer musician and I wpuld more likely bejealous of other musicians, not someone doing something non musical however good they are at the subject mattee

SilverPink · 06/05/2026 14:21

@perkydo you ever start any threads that aren’t negative? Genuine question.

And there’s a million videos out there on YouTube, they’re not all false and manipulative. That’s an extremely narrow minded view. People can watch YouTube and also have friends in real life 🤷🏻‍♀️

This is very true…

….unless you happen to share your account with your 16 yr old DS (learning disability) and then you find your feed clogged up with Super Mario, Dragon Ball Z, and Ninjago… 😂🫣

On a separate note, I’m a copywriter who’s flipping to writing books (damn you AI!) so if you have any recommendations for writers to follow, I’d be very interested.

Let’s see if I can drown out DS’s content 😂😂

Hostile17Lover · 06/05/2026 15:31

Of course, they're false, just like TV presenters have fake personas when they're onscreen.

It would be pretty hard to keep up a false persona because eventually you would crack under the strain

Not really because they only have to pretend as long as it takes to film something and they can edit videos as much as they need to.

Sorry you’re hilarious.

I couldn’t possibly recognise someone from your description, because you AKSHULLY watched another PhD YouTuber as well (even though you didn’t mention them here).

I guess the other YouTuber doesn’t go to this school.

Anyway I’m out, I was trying to have a good faith discussion but you clearly weren’t 👋

I guess it's OK if you just see it as entertainment and not a substitute for real face to face interactions. I have a social group. We meet monthly for outings and social stuff. That to me is far more beneficial than some stranger on a screen saying hello my friend

Why do you think anyone would see it as a substitute for face to face interactions? That isn’t what it’s for. It’s equivalent to watching TV. It’s not meant to be anything like a face to face interaction.

Also, you do realise there are loads and loads of different types of YouTube channels and content, right? Most of it really isn’t videos of people who document their lives. Everything I watch on YouTube is either content/discussion that’s about subjects I’m interested in, and things like video tutorials for hobbies and crafts and things, or sometimes DIY project tutorials. I’ve never watched anything that consists of someone just talking about their life.

Are you familiar with the concept of acting?

Plenty of people don’t find it difficult to put on a persona for the amount of time it takes to film a video, present a TV show, act in a play, do a presentation at work or whatever. The vast majority of people are capable of doing this. It doesn’t mean they’re ’false’ or duplicitous; it just means they’re capable of modifying their behaviour in ways that are appropriate to the occasion. All normal people do this.

I think this does highlight the weirdness of POV/first person content creators who do a lot of mugging to the camera. It blurs the line between entertainment and one to one, both the way they interact with the viewer and the medium of vlogs/reels/tiktoks which for some people feel a lot more personal than watching tv, which some younger people never do. Those of us who grew up before social media can spot the difference much better.

PerkyOchrePeer · 16/05/2026 02:06

Having thought about this more, ive come to the conclusion that content creators are just attention seekers ive seen one or two who over share personal aspects of their life that should remain private like the fact that they are in a highly well paid job and have never been in debt. It's just boasting.

Well yes, of course they are attention seekers, they are literally seeking attention, that's how they make their money.

I did watch a few videos made by a highly academic woman hoping to study for a PHD. She gained a masters degree at Oxford University. Good on her of she has the brains to do a PHD. She documents her studies but in most ofhervideos she sits playing with her long hair. I find that a bit irritating and whilst her videos were interesting j domt watch anymore because she's trying to tell people how to tackle doing a PHD and she is not a university professor which are the only people I would listen to if I were doing a degree. She has not even completed her PHD

There you go again, @PerkyOchrePeer, picking fights on spurious grounds with randoms because they’re disobeying rules that exist largely in your head. If you’re not doing it in RL, you’re doing with with YouTubers.

I don’t know the YouTuber you’re mentioning, but I’m not sure what your issue is — that she’s documenting what it’s like doing a doctorate? That she has long hair? Doctoral students are often at the cutting edge of research, and whether or not they’re awarded the PhD (it’s a DPhil at Oxford) depends on whether they’re judged by established experts in the field to have made a sufficient contribution to knowledge.
