In honour of the the irritating "£50 on food to feed a family of four for a week thread" last week - I looked up the Aldi website. Lidl was almost impossible to use.
500g spaghetti 28p. Or 500g gluten free spaghetti or 500g gluten free fusilli = 29p
1 packet cheese sauce mix. Or peppercorn sauce or parsley sauce. Obviously most people would pick cheese but the options are out there = 29p
That leaves 12p. For a tiny lone tomato or mushroom or carrot or something.
Or even maybe a banana for dessert if you don't mind the gluten in your pasta and have an extra penny.
I have assumed you have no seasonings at all. Not even salt and pepper. You have water and a heat source. You are going to one reasonably easily found British supermarket shop, not chasing all over town. You are not, "Foraging" or stealing condiments from Macdonalds or any of that nonsense.
All prices are real prices not special offer. The cheese sauce is said to be 10p cheaper but that seems to be a permanent adjustment that's been there months. If it does prove to be temporary, we'll just have to save the extra 2p for next time and be glad.
If you you would like something more natural tasting than the cheese sauce, they also have extra thick yellow cream for 29p. But you would really have to squish some flavour out of your tiny vegetable to get the juices going for your pasta sauce and probably forgo your banana it that case.
Not haute cuisine but edible and even gluten free and vegetarian if needs be. I doubt that there's much rennet in a 29p cheese sauce.
Take that Jack Monroe.
