What was the first meal your partner made you?

Inspired by the thread on AIBU regarding a meal cooked by a woman's date I wondered what was the first meal your partner made for you.

Mine cooked a pre made (albeit finest range) lasagne, with salad and ciabatta. He used balsamic vinegar as dressing, that I also remember.

I dont think he even made a proper home made lasagne until we lived together but I still appreciated the effort.

Don’t knock fajitas meal kits! I gave an ex an old El Paso kit that you baked in the oven, he liked it.

Don’t worry, I was just referencing the other thread mentioned in the OP. We are still proudly an old El Paso household!

I did snigger a bit when I read that thread as my DH cooked me bacon crunchies (like chicken Kiev but more processed) and peas and sweetcorn.

We've been together 30 very happy years and he doesn't make a lot of effort but is a rock solid support, who can be relied on, except for catering really!

Fish finger sandwiches with ketchup. For context, we were students at the time.

I think it was packet cheese and broccoli pasta.

We were teenagers, it was at his family's house with his parents. I didn't know he was going to be cooking. I remember him being quite bashful about it.

CreamFirstJamSecond · 04/05/2026 14:07

Prepared chicken with veg and potatoes

ohyesido · 04/05/2026 14:09

A Jamie Oliver chicken fricasee with white wine sauce. Thank you for making me think of this, I might try making it after 16 years

Ginorchoc · 04/05/2026 14:12

My partner does all the cooking, I never cook, the first thing he made was a seafood platter and three different types of brownies.

His parents.
They invited me to their little house, moved their dining table into the living room (it was folded down against a wall as they had no room to set it up anywhere, teeny tiny house)
His dad made little name places with cardboard.
Tiny chopped up salad in jelly bowls and breaded chicken (Asda’s as I recall) & oven fries (tiny tiny portions)
then Vienetta as a treat as they had me, their guest.
They had what they called posh pop which was flavoured water in mismatching glasses. They only ever had this at Christmas I came to understand.

They had nothing, not 2 pennies to rub together. The effort that they went to was so sweet.

Doseofreality · 04/05/2026 14:25

Bacon sandwiches, mornimg after we met 😀

Pallisers · 04/05/2026 14:27

Gardenflowering that is so lovely!

Dh made me lamb chops in a tarragon cream sauce with potatoes and broccoli. It was a recipe card he got in the butcher. 30 plus years later we still make this. I do most of the cooking now - my preference.

HolidayPlanningAgain · 04/05/2026 14:30

I read that thread and was laughing as my now DH made me a Thai Green Curry from one of those packet mixes! It was really tasty and I was appreciative after a particularly busy week in work, we then watched a film, well he did, I fell asleep curled up on his sofa was about 8 years ago and he’s a fabulous cook but no need to be over fancy all the time

Allseeingallknowing · 04/05/2026 14:35

Grilled chicken and chips

blankcanvas3 · 04/05/2026 14:38

Pesto pasta, still the only thing he can make but I appreciate it regardless

Dreamstosell · 04/05/2026 14:41

Cheese salad. Just lettuce leaves, whole tomato, whole uncut spring onion and some cucumber and some grated cheese. No dressing. Asked if I’d like some bread and butter with it

TheActualRoystonClub · 04/05/2026 14:42

A bacon sandwich.
It was after DC1 was born, we were very young and only lived together for two weeks prior to the birth and he went into the kitchen for about twenty minutes then came out and asked me how to make a bacon sandwich!
We’ve been together for 28 years and I’d like to say he’s improved, but he hasn’t although he makes a great bacon sandwich.

TheChosenTwo · 04/05/2026 14:57

A carbonara when we got back from the pub, I couldn’t believe it involved a raw egg concoction but it won me over and I’ve never forgotten it!

AnnaQuayRules · 04/05/2026 15:00

Over 30 years ago now, but I seem to remember it was a supermarket pizza to which he'd added some extra mushrooms and sweetcorn. He'd also made biscuits which were horrendous. I can't remember what flavour they were, but I do remember they were like concrete at the edge but undercooked/raw in the middle.

patooties · 04/05/2026 15:13

Some weird Jamie Oliver bacon egg and bread tray bake. I’d had an impromptu sleepover … 🤣😬

Haffway · 04/05/2026 15:20

A chicken stirfry which he had bought, pre chopped, veg and sauce included, from the butcher, and served with Uncle Ben’s boil in the bag rice.

I was not long out of college and in the 90s/00s women my age prided ourselves on the absence of traditional female skills. I’d have bought pre chopped chicken and veg and opened a jar of sauce myself.

MightyGoldBear · 04/05/2026 16:43

First date, full roast dinner and a homemade cheesecake 😋 it was lovely. He loves cooking and I love eating we are a match made in heaven 🤣

Lostsadandconfused · 04/05/2026 16:49

Breakfast 😛

He’s a very good cook, though not a trained chef he’s owned restaurants in the past.

SpringPuppie · 04/05/2026 16:52

An omelette.. Can’t believe i married him after that… Joking, I love omelettes.

Simonjt · 04/05/2026 16:54

He never has, for which I’m very thankful as the recipes he finds and suggests don’t sound pleasant.

AgnesMcDoo · 04/05/2026 16:55

It was 27 years ago and I can’t remember

DilemmaDelilah · 04/05/2026 20:10

Some sort of minced beef hotpot I think. Or it may have been curried liver. He hasn't made that again! I like liver and I like curry, but not together.

The first meal I made for him was poached salmon, green beans amandine, orange glazed carrots and saffron rice. I was trying to impress him. I don't even like salmon!
