Creative gifts for 5 year old

I'm looking for recommendations for gifts for a child who loves arts and crafts, drawing and making things, but has most of the usual art and craft supplies. We've got the pipe cleaners, googly eyes and stickers. We've had mosaics, moulds to paint, stamps, beads, coloured tapes.

I just saw an advert for a Spirograph and thought about that and some Crayola stamp pens that I had as a child.

Any other ideas?

They also have play doh, plasticine and clay. Loom bands. Hama beads...

When my children were little (and I had NO money) I used to cut pictures out of magazines for them to make collage pictures of - not necessarily stuck, so that they could be re-used. We could then make up a story about their pictures. Things like bits of faces, or houses, or furniture or clothes. If you had people and animals and houses you could do a whole story.

Have you had a look on Pinterest? There’s a whole host of art & craft ideas for children on there.

Chocolattcoffeecup · 03/05/2026 15:22

That's a nice idea @DilemmaDelilah

@24Dogcuddler I've gone a bit off hobby craft with all the asbestos scares lately but I'll take a look. I thought about a big craft box but we have everything so not sure what I'd buy. The book is a good idea. I'd have to buy some of the things in it that we don't have.

@cheapskatemum No I haven't because it's more birthday gift ideas I'm looking for rather than a craft I'd have to buy all the bits for.

Could be a coloring calendar with her favorite characters, you can find coloring pages online and combine them into a cute wall calendar or maybe a poster (here are some tips for that).
Science kits could be a good gift, but I'm not sure if 5 yo isn't too young. Kinetic sand is always a hit though!

Chocolattcoffeecup · 05/05/2026 11:26

@IAmTheStreets Kinetic sand is a hit in our house but this asbestos risk has put me off. I'm probably being dramatic but new products are announced weekly.

We got a science kit last year and have exhausted it so that is actually on my list!

The calendar is a nice idea. I'll have a look at that.

FIMO soft is a hit with my children, but I'm not sure what kind of clay she has already.

It sounds like she has lots of craft supplies so I'd get some books with inspiration for things she can make with what she already has.

A kit for paint your own money box.
A flower press.
Paint by numbers set.
One of those things where you scrape bits off a black page and you end up with a silver/gold picture. I think they are called something like Scrapeofoil.

One of DD’s favourite presents at that age was a set of 8 scissors all of which had different edges so cut different patterns
A stack of different papers - crepe paper, shiny paper, tissue paper
A hot glue gun (used under supervision)
Some plastic suncatchers to decorate with special pens

Djeco and molin rotti have amazing sets
