Leaving Talktalk

The only reason I have stayed is because there is such a hassle trying to leave. But I work from home and that is impacted by the poor level of wi-fi. I think I can terminate my contract early by providing evidence that I don't get the service at the level I pay for. My work IT remoted in and said my wi-fi is below standards, but the times I have contacted wi-fi to complain, they have tested mine and claimed it is adequate or what it is supposed to be. What can I do?

Appreciate any advice if others have been through this and managed to change away from TalkTalk. I also have telly box with them and landline.

Is it your broadband that is poor or your WiFi, what is the speed like at the hub?

If the BB speed is up to spec and it is the WiFi that is poor, this can be down to a number of things which are out of control of TT.
If the BB itself is good, can you use an ethernet cable to cut out reliance on WiFi completely?

Thanks using an ethernet cable seriously restricts where I can work int he house so would prefer not to use it.

Youfibre were doing an offer recently where they bought you out of an existing contract.

we’re with them now and speeds are much improved. We also work from home and had issues with slow speeds over the openreach network, made no difference which provider.

My dad left Talktalk last week but I think his contract was up. We’ve been trying to encourage him to quit them for years, but he was put off at having to change his email address. All done now and his speeds (and customer service!!) are massively improved

We moved away from TalkTalk because we were unhappy with the quality of our Internet connection. We have been with Virgin ever since, and we are happier with this, although it still isn't perfect.

We made a complaint before we left, and they agreed to refund us some of what we had paid. However, it took us ages to actually get the refund and they were repeatedly sending me debt collection letters for money that we didn't owe. Tbh, I was almost at the point of just paying it in order to make them go away, but DH was persistent and eventually managed to get it sorted out.

So it wasn't easy but we have no regrets and would not ever consider going back.

Ok, but the question still stands as to whether it is the BB or WiFi that is poor?

Do you move to different work locations around the house or just a single spot?
Hardwiring an ethernet point could solve your issue entirely (just saying).

agree. It will at least tell you whether your laptop speeds are slow because of the broadband or WiFi.

if you Ethernet to your router, are your speeds significantly different than when you are connected to the WiFi?

if they are much slower when on WiFi, then changing provider won’t make a difference as it’s an issue with the WiFi signal in your house. If the speed are the same, however you connect, then it’s the broadband that is slow.

Ethernet cable no help. Also telly recording box so old it does not record properly any more. TalkTalk refused to replace to a newer model.

Talk talk were the only company I had poor service with. It was absolutely horrendous I wouldn’t go back if I was paid.

EmeraldRoulette · 02/05/2026 17:36

Are you still in contract?

If not, then you might have to just cancel it

I had a terrible time leaving them, I was literally in tears on the phone

And I had moved house! It was truly extraordinary

I actually think I left with them owing me £80

I tried putting that case through Resolver but no luck

Then I decided that it was probably worth paying £80 never to have to speak to them again.

Sorry you're going through this I always tell everybody to never ever use them. It's the complete lack of customer service that's the problem.
