If you have sleep headphones what do you listen to?

CeffylCoch · 01/05/2026 20:22

Had some sleep headphones a few months ago for my birthday. Usually listen to rain noise, white noise or sleep sounds but getting a bit bored of them. I have Amazon Alexa which apparently have lots of different options but can’t find list of them anywhere. Any recommendations please?

I listen to audio books or documentaries. They send me to sleep very quickly so I never know what they are about, but they do help calm my active brain for sleep.

mynameiscalypso · 01/05/2026 20:26

Podcasts generally. The Rest is History at the moment.

CeffylCoch · 01/05/2026 20:28

Thankyou for replies can you recommend any podcasts or audiobooks? I’ve never listened to any of them and wouldn’t know where to start

I listen to old audiobooks, I need to have listened before so I know what happens and have them on a timer so I can easily find where I left off. It also needs to be a voice I like. I’m basically giving myself a bedtime story 😳

I listen to bbc sounds , generally the old comedy shows, dad's army , old Harry's game , no commitments and others I can't think of right now

The white noise type things are irritating !

CheeseWisely · 01/05/2026 20:31

Podcasts (although I don’t have headphones, I stick my phone under the pillow with the volume on low). If you’re interested in history the Short History Of podcast is good, they cover everything from historic events to individual people and they have a couple of narrators each with very soothing voices, and no sudden laughter or sound effects. Rosebud with Gyles Brandreth interviewing interesting people about their lives is another calm and gentle one.

There’s a couple of true crime ones with sleep inducing narration too, but the subject matter isn’t for everyone at bedtime!

Atm David Attenborough is on bbc sounds doing 15 min shows about loads of different animals and birds.

Bunnyofhope · 01/05/2026 20:34

Audiobooks. Get borrow box or similar and listen to whichever book you fancy. Mine recognise when I am asleep and turn off.

SoloClarinet · 01/05/2026 20:46

Freakonomics Radio podcast. They send me to sleep but I then have to listen to them again during the day because they are so interesting!

Depends what you’re into - there’s 100’s!

If you like politics then The Rest Is Politics is great… The Book Club, discussing books to read is also fab if you like reading…If you like listening to interviews then How To Fail with Elizabeth Day is nice - people talking about their biggest “failures” but also what they learned from them… there’s loads of chatty ones.. Dig It - with Zoe Ball and Jo Whiley which can be good but also a bit nauseating… all the Dessert Island Discs with Lauren Lavern are on there - love her! The Ranganathan Show is quite entertaining although he’s probably quite marmite… The Adam Buxton Podcast and The Louis Theroux Podcast are also both excellent in my opinion.

But that’s just some examples- there’s gardening pods, menopause pods, comedy pods - you name it, it’s out there! Just download Spotify.

I find listening to people speak makes me drift off to sleep really easily 😊

There’s definitely some pocast recommendations threads on here too!

Ooh yes love that too!

I listen to an audiobook with a timer on it so it stops. Also listen to sleep stories on Calm. There’s some lovely ones on there like train journeys, walks around medieval towns etc.

I listen to the Rest is History. The theme music doesn't wake me up, so it can just keep playing and playing (I pay for it so no ads.)

The other one that doesn't wake me is The History of English but that only puts out a new one every 2-3 months so in between I'm on TRIH. I wouldn't pay for TRIE even though I love Marina Hyde as the theme music wakes me up just as much as ads so there's no point.

Unfortunately all BBC podcasts have a super loud shouty advert at the beginning of them so they are no good, otherwise I would recommend In Our Time, which I used to love. I like to leave it playing all night as I have trained myself to stay down if the podcast is playing. It turns off at 6.30am every morning so I know when it's morning and never look at the clock. (I wear an eyemask too.) They are interesting enough to keep you lying still if you wake up in the night, but soothing enough to fall asleep to.

@SpringAndSunshineIsHereI like Romesh’s podcast but I can’t use it for sleep, there’s an air horn sound affect at least once or twice in each episode! Grin

oh yeah some podcasts do wake me up as they end… but sometimes I just put it on my phone so it’s not right in my ears!

Audiobooks, podcasts, music... bad sleeper.

Fast Asleep with Gena Marie. Guaranteed to never hear the end of her stories.

ASMR. Relaxing with Lisa, with the most relaxing voice that sends me to sleep in no time.

I like the Short History of podcast to go to sleep to too. The narrators voices are very soporific

UnaOfStormhold · Yesterday 19:36

There are lots of sleep specific podcasts - Nothing much happens is nice, years worth of cosy original stories and the woman reading them has a very relaxing voice. Or Sleepy which is a guy reading classic books.

NoraButty · Yesterday 19:37

I listen to Sleep Magic, it’s sleep hypnosis, so I’m bettering myself while I sleep 😁

i also like pink noise, and rain on a train noise.
