What is this headache that’s not a headache?

I’ll preface this with the fact that it’s the week(ish) before my period stupid be here.

for the last week at least I have had a constant issue with my head. It’s like a headache but not a headache in that painkillers don’t touch it and I am functional. But it’s horrible! Sort of like pressure or a tight scalp, very foggy and sleepy feeling so that I can’t think clearly and forget my words. I want to go back to bed my midday. Can’t get enough sleep.

assume this is hormonal but how? And is there anything I can do to get rid of it or ease it? It’s not an unfamiliar feeling but I’ve never had it for this long and so constant.

hoping this sounds familiar to somebody.

I experience this after a migraine- sort like a hangover.

But if you've never had it before, it couldn't hurt to ring 111.

Yea it is a bit like that, I get migraines a lot. But this hasn’t turned into one as such

Maybe it’s been one long migraine and still is!

Check your blood pressure

TheWickerFan · 01/05/2026 10:05

It probably is a migraine. You don't always get the actual pain. I get a lot of silent migraines, and they feel like this.

sunflowersandsunsets · 01/05/2026 10:06

It sounds like a migraine - they don’t always occur with pain.

100% Check your BP

Check your blood pressure

Agreed. That could be it. It's like a headache that doesn't lift.

ShellSong · 01/05/2026 10:23

Thanks so much, wouldn’t have thought to check my blood pressure. Will have a look into that

otherwise it’s reassuring to hear migraines can be like this too. Normally it would have culminated and knocked me out but this has just been a weird long preamble

Yes I’ve had migraines like that but you should take blood pressure and if it persists make urgent GP appointment.

PrincessofWells · 01/05/2026 10:26

Also Op get your eyes checked. There are some conditions that cause a heightened cerebral fluid pressure and this will be picked up by a thorough sight test and eye examination.

This website explains the 4 stages of migraine. I have had the same as u lasting a week before the "main" migraine.
