Is Steve Reed out of the picture now he’s housing minister? But then he’s not council based anymore. We had someone from the greens around yesterday. My DM leaflets for Clare bonham (liberal).

CleanShirt · 01/05/2026 11:07

I'm still unsure so following with interest

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 01/05/2026 11:08

Any party that won’t go bankrupt yet again would be my choice.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 01/05/2026 11:09

I mean bankrupt the local council.

EmeraldRoulette · 01/05/2026 11:51

Is it Croydon Council that went bankrupt twice?

Yes. Maybe 3 times?

You don’t want to know the past drama with them… I worked there briefly as PA to a chief exec who used to work at a big accounts firm. Was meant to be helping local businesses there (they were setting up and supporting a lot of small ones) but did what he could or not and afaik then buggered off. Approx 2010 I think? Or before or after?

I desperately don't want Perry back in for mayor. So maybe Labour if it keeps him out- Rowena Davis seems a decent candidate. I see Maddy Henderson (Labour) on our local community groups constantly helping with queries and things so I've been impressed with how much she seems to care. Ideologically I have toyed with Green, they seem decent too, and I liked the independent mayoral candidate from the market. I will ultimately vote anyway that gets rid of Perry (that isn't Reform!) as my main priority. I really don't trust him, particularly over the backhanded chats that seemed to be going on around addington hills soon after he got in. Surprisingly Labour is the only party that has come round canvassing our homes at all to speak with us. I am disappointed by that as I had hoped the Greens might have called.

happysunr1se · 01/05/2026 12:25

I think anyone will have a hard time turning Croydon around financially, I'm not even sure it's possible, what with col and social care needs going up, more people out of work inc elderly than in work.

The candidate booklet is a shallow read.
Tbh they all say the same things; fight knife crime, stop fly tipping but don't really say what they are gonna do to achieve this.

I even got a letter (paid for by Perry) from a labour councillor urging is to vote Perry to keep reform out!

I am leaning towards Rowena, but I can't realistically see how she can get nestle building owners to sell or develop themselves, but I do like her Croydon way idea.

Edited

We had greens can’t recall labour coming round.

Three times? Wow, that's quite an achievement.

So councils get money from central government if they
go bankrupt? There's no incentive to avoid it.

I was going to ask if Croydon was the council who wasted all the money investing in hotels. But at the time I didn't understand why they were investing in hotels. Obviously, I do now! It sounds like there's a lot to it

Anyway, you can now vote for Keir Starmer's niece

I feel bad for her if she doesn't know her uncle and just happens to be related. I don't know the full story.

CleanShirt · 07/05/2026 11:16

I still don't know who to vote for! I'm South Croydon which is currently Tory but no idea how strong reform are here...

borogovia · 07/05/2026 11:26

We've had the Greens round multiple times (West Croydon). Reform have sent leaflets but haven't been on the doorstep at all; I'd be surprised if they had many voters here but I'm surprised I haen't seen them at all. The Greens do have voters here and are really making an effort.

That seems similar to me in Crystal Palace. Only greens around but my mum who lives nearby knows Claire Bonham.

CleanShirt · 07/05/2026 12:36

I didn't have one green leaflet here in the south but a bunch of reform ones!
