Some much needed rain please

Is anyone else praying for rain? Here in west Somerset there has been no rain, apart from a few pathetic showers, since the end of February and the land is already parched and desperately in need of a few days of good, steady rain to rehydrate the soil. The weather is, according to my records, following the exact same pattern as last year which, along with the drying winds, is massively depleting the land's moisture content.

Grass is already burning up on some of the roadside verges and starting to resemble late June. The birds which rely on worms to feed their broods, ie blackbirds and robins are struggling to find sufficient food sources and look desperate.

Anyone else feel that it is too dry, too early in the season?

I haven't cut the grass yet so it's really lush here. Long grass can keep the ground up to 20 degrees cooler than bare soil. The dry weather means there are loads of insects. I put out some calciworms for the blackbirds on the path though, they know when I go out in the morning that that's what I'm doing, same with the robins.

It's also supposed to be changing and quite showery over the next couple of weeks. April is often my favourite month due to the weather.

Please wait until after the bank holiday.

It always rains on bank holidays so you'll probably have no need to pray then.

There's a Bank Holiday coming. That should bring you your rain.

It's not too bad here, but water butt empty and I've given inna couple of times this week and filled watering cans with tap water as pots really dry and plants in flower clearing aren't going to last as long as usual. Grass is still lush, but there are signs of dry patches.

I don't want downpours, but definitely some showers or constant rain.

I actually watered my garden today, and I'm in Scotland!

The grass fires in the hills near us are in their fifth day.

In April.

In Wales.

I'm rain dancing with you, OP.

I love rain. We need it and it’s just not happening:(
Is it a glitch, climate change, just how it is now ?
The weather has changed so much.

We went to Wales a couple of weeks ago and it lashed it down for most of the week.

Icanflyhigh · 30/04/2026 23:24

We've had almost 4 seasons everyday this last few weeks in the Midlands!

lavendarwillow · 30/04/2026 23:28

Yes we do need rain, noticeable cracks in the wooded path on a walk this evening. I haven’t had to cut my grass in a few weeks, when it’s usually once a week this time of year. I know our winters are now much wetter but I don’t need to water my plants in winter!

TheBirdintheCave · 30/04/2026 23:57

Here we had one month of solid rain and now one solidly dry month. Bizarre. I’m looking forward to the rain on Saturday 😆 We had grass seed put down two weeks ago and I’m sick to death of constantly watering it with the hose x_x
