Well I never!

For tonight's dinner I made salad, wholemeal pasta, tuna and dh made boiled eggs to go with it. Dh peeled the eggs and I watched him doing so as we chatted away (stay with me here) anyway, we sat down eating and chatting I looked down and my eggs had vibrant blue spots!!!!! Dh Googled and apparently red cabbage (was in the salad) can turn eggs blue!

This was all new to me at the grand old age of 45. Any fun facts you recently found out?

Edited to say it can be any fact. The title is mumsnet Ai Hmm

If you.put cheese on cream crackers and microwave. The crackers will stay room temperature and crispy but the cheese melts

OvernightBloats · 01/05/2026 13:39

Last time I tried to melt dark chocolate in the microwave, there were sparks. It looked like a firework display was going on!

Chocolate has a low water content so you have to be really careful when you microwave it.

Cous cous is actually a pasta. I always thought it was a grain!

I always thought it was like quinoa or something. Recently diagnosed coeliac and only discovered this a few weeks ago...turns out eating it most days for my lunch wasn't as healthy as I thought (for me at least) 😭

That vegetable oil and rapeseed oil are the same but one costs a lot more, so just buy vegetable oil. 🥰

If you put cheese on cream crackers then put them near me I can make them disappear!

All couscous is pasta though. Not just the giant stuff.

My brain needs a rest!
The amount of times I thought I was being healthy by eating couscous instead of pasta🤦‍♀️.

Wild figs and some commercial types of figs are pollinated by tiny wasps, which can die inside the fruit. An enzyme breaks down the wasps, so there are no traces by the time the fig is eaten.

Yes I was shocked when my veggie friend told me she doesn’t eat figs for that reason.

Marrows are just courgettes that have been left to grow bigger. I thought they were different plants!

When you eat raw pineapple, it eats you back.

It’s to do with a specific enzyme (bromelain).

God, yes - I once ate a whole fresh pineapple because it was so sweet and delicious. Just as I was finishing I realised my tongue felt red-raw and was burning. Never again.

BillieWiper · 03/05/2026 10:12

Yeah if you boil red cabbage it goes blue.

It makes chicken go blue as well.

Lasagna batteries are wild — lasagne baked in a steel tin then covered in a foil lid will create an electric current.

The current can burn holes in the foil top!

Similar to fruit and potato batteries it’s not that the food is a source of energy, but the two different metals acting as electrodes forming a potential difference which pushes electrons

Sourdough and how tasty it is. Not a fact as such but OMG where have I been living?!? Under a bloody rock 😂

Edited

I know how you feel….great isn’t it! (New to sourdough in the last 4 weeks after getting a yellow sticker one from m&s!)

Brussels sprouts, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, kohl rabi, cabbages and mustards are all bassicas. They're all cross bred with eat other to make another.

Swedes are also brassicas.

In the north east…and maybe Scotland….swedes are called turnips and turnips are called Swedes!

You can eat cashew fruit, @10UsernamesNotAvailableTryAnotherOne. It's a pleasant flavour with (imo) a weird texture.

The toxic part is the outer shell of the nut, which can give a nasty blistering rash if you handle it. The nuts have to be roasted to neutralise the poison.

There are ethical issues surrounding cashews because of this

If you go to cafes, you've probably already had it as toast.

Opposite here in Tyneside! But in north Northumberland we call the big purple ones ‘bageys’
it’s what they’re also called in Scandinavia….probably from their horticultural name ‘rutabaga’ or however it’s spelled!!
