Well I never!

For tonight's dinner I made salad, wholemeal pasta, tuna and dh made boiled eggs to go with it. Dh peeled the eggs and I watched him doing so as we chatted away (stay with me here) anyway, we sat down eating and chatting I looked down and my eggs had vibrant blue spots!!!!! Dh Googled and apparently red cabbage (was in the salad) can turn eggs blue!

This was all new to me at the grand old age of 45. Any fun facts you recently found out?

Edited to say it can be any fact. The title is mumsnet Ai Hmm

You can charge up mushrooms with vitamin D by putting them in the sunshine.

User478 · 30/04/2026 18:35

If you squeeze lemon juice (or another acid) on the blue spots they turn pink!

You can do it with turmeric too, it changes from yellow to orange (but it stains so watch out!)

I didn't eat my blue bits and binned them. Wish I still had them to try with the lemon juice. Really interesting thanks.

I made dauphinous potatoes with red onions once. When it cooled the onions went bluey green colour and it looked like it was mouldy ! But it looked perfectly appetising once I reheated it again.

No idea why I ever thought pineapples grew on trees until we passed a plantation in Africa, kinda blew my mind.

Probably due to Agadoo!

Meetmeunderthemoonlight · 30/04/2026 19:33

Sourdough and how tasty it is. Not a fact as such but OMG where have I been living?!? Under a bloody rock 😂

RS1987 · 30/04/2026 19:35

That tenderstem broccoli is a cross between broccoli and kale

Quite a sight isnt it! Great photo.

ultracynic · 30/04/2026 19:39

Not me, honest, but my friend was well into her forties when she realised raisins are dried grapes. Shes by no means thick, but she’s never lived it down!

SourdoughSally · 30/04/2026 19:40

I made a stir fried rice dish that had scrambled egg and red cabbage, among other things.

Took a portion to heat up at work to find blue scrambled egg. I told my colleague it had gone a bit mouldy, but I didn't want to waste it. She was having kittens watching me eat what she thought was mould! I did confess halfway through 😀

Brussels sprouts, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, kohl rabi, cabbages and mustards are all bassicas. They're all cross bred with eat other to make another.

Helpmechooseausername · 30/04/2026 19:42

You can do a science experiment using red cabbage as a pH indicator! Good one too do with the kids

ScottBakula · 30/04/2026 19:52

Certainly not a recent issue but many many years ago my GPs thought that mushroom stems were poisonous, this is despite my GD been a very good gardener with two big greenhouses and a almost constant line of fresh grown veg been produced through the year .

BnmLK · 30/04/2026 19:54

If you squeeze lemon juice on garlic it turns blue.

You shouldn't eat shiitake mushrooms raw.

ItaGonnaBeMay · 30/04/2026 19:59

How Greek yoghurt and flour can make all sorts! Flatbread, pizza dough, bagels and so much more

Redheadedstepchild · 30/04/2026 20:10

You can exploit the food changing colours thing by using raw beetroot in coleslaw. There you go, pink coleslaw. Or Barbie coleslaw, depending on the kind of diner you wish to impress and their age.

Staying on the (sort of) pink theme, not one but two dentists were involved independently and with no knowledge of each other in inventing the commercial candy floss or cotton candy machine. One in Chicago, the other in New Orleans.

Allegedly. It's a conspiracy by Big Tooth, I tell you.

On silly ideas about nutritional values, I used to work in a restaurant with a woman who thought the crusts of bread were actually better for you than the crumb. And she was French. Chef nearly lost his mind explaining.

You can use a potato as a battery though.
