Well I never!

For tonight's dinner I made salad, wholemeal pasta, tuna and dh made boiled eggs to go with it. Dh peeled the eggs and I watched him doing so as we chatted away (stay with me here) anyway, we sat down eating and chatting I looked down and my eggs had vibrant blue spots!!!!! Dh Googled and apparently red cabbage (was in the salad) can turn eggs blue!

This was all new to me at the grand old age of 45. Any fun facts you recently found out?

Edited to say it can be any fact. The title is mumsnet Ai Hmm

Oreos have almost no 'food' in them.

Not me, honest, but my friend was well into her forties when she realised raisins are dried grapes. Shes by no means thick, but she’s never lived it down!

I was well in my 30s when I discovered this too 🤷🏼‍♀️

You can use a potato as a battery though.

Or a lemon!

@Arlanymor I always thought pineapple grew on tress too. Had a Google and have attached a picture. Thanks

I look at that photo and just think of how many injuries those prickles and spikes would inflict on my hands.

That tenderstem broccoli is a cross between broccoli and kale

I had no idea

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 30/04/2026 20:44

I know that Rudolf Diesel patented the ice cube for drinks.

PearlsTeapot · 30/04/2026 20:47

The pineapple thing blew my mind when I was 30! Why did I think they grew on trees?

Wilkolampshade · 30/04/2026 20:48

Friend of my daughter (tho' a child at the time) thought peanuts grew on a tree, more worryingly, friend of mine, then mid twenties Oxford PPE graduate, thought aubergines grew underground...

Sloom · 30/04/2026 20:56

That creme fraiche has so many more calories than both cream and sour cream. A 300ml pot has 850 cal Vs 580 in the same amount of single cream.

The cream and sour cream seem so much more indulgent somehow.

DilemmaDelilah · 30/04/2026 21:06

Cous cous is actually a pasta. I always thought it was a grain!

flymeawaytothesunshine · 30/04/2026 21:07

I once had a women on one of my training sessions who thought peas grew on trees, and that men shock the trees and they caught the peas in a net below.

Mooselooseinmyhoose · 30/04/2026 21:11

That lentils grow on bushes! Not sure I ever thought about lentils but in my head they were sort of like pasta and "made"! Probably just me being an idiot!

Vanillazebra · 30/04/2026 21:12

Weetabix isn't that good for you (high in carbs)

Meetmeunderthemoonlight · 30/04/2026 21:18

I only found out about the raisins the other week. I am 45! Potato and lemon electricity sounds a interesting Google.

Love weetabix but it bloats me up so bad. All bran however well let's just say it gives you a complete clear out.

Bananas are related to orchids and can be split into three even sections with pressure placed on the middle of the tip although it works better after a small bite to make the surface area bigger.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 30/04/2026 21:21

That mushrooms are nearer to being animals than plants. They are no longer classified as plants because of this.

LOL. That's olives!

Funnily enough that's what I said. We were both amazed- she when when I showed her pictures of how peas grew, and I that someone in their late 20's did not know how one of our staple foods was grown.

BloodandGlitter · 30/04/2026 21:39

Bicarb turns carrots green. We made carrot cake and DS didn't mix it too well so it looked like it had turned mouldy.

That there are more calories in a pint of orange juice or a pint of milk than there are in a pint of Guinness.

(how I used to justify my Guinness drinking days)

Being forced to run through a pineapple field as the leaves are will cut you to shreds was a cruel punishment in…somewhere where they grow pineapples…could have been to do with slavery? Sorry, this is one of those half remembered facts from childhood!

FettchYeSandbagges · 30/04/2026 21:53

Pineapple harvesters / factory workers have no fingerprints.

WearyLady · 30/04/2026 21:54

Brussels sprouts, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, kohl rabi, cabbages and mustards are all bassicas. They're all cross bred with eat other to make another.

Swedes are also brassicas.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/04/2026 21:57

On the subject of blue/green in food, you can make a universal indicator solution to test the ph /acidity of liquids out of red cabbage water (boil red cabbage in water and use the liquid)
