I couldn’t find a thread about this-there must be one, surely? Anyway, I just wanted to say as a militant Republican this is the very first time I have appreciated the famous “soft diplomacy” in action. Let’s just hope nobody ever explains the speeches to Trump -but well done, that man!

Yes same, I’m quite proud of him. Very clever and his delivery was spot on . He’s done us proud .

Soft diplomacy in action. An advantage when dealing with a world leader who seems to make decisions based on who he likes or respects. The UK is fortunate he likes our monarch.

RufustheFactualReindeer · 30/04/2026 20:27

Agreed, he has done well

would be good if trump learned some manners…but he won’t

If we don’t have a monarch - then who? Would not have the same admiration from others. Best the devil you know!

Charles was excellent. I've never been a fan of his but I was impressed.

I was already convinced that JD Vance's visit to Hampton Court Palace was a quality piece of trolling by whoever suggested it.

Now I'm wondering if the idea came from the top.Grin

(The Palace was built by Wolsey, Henry VIII's enabler-in-chief, who eventually ceased to be able to deliver the impossible for the increasingly mad and possibly syphilitic Henry, was scapegoated and arrested for treason, and died on his way to the Tower of London. Wolsey built Hampton Court with the riches he made from his grift under Henry – particularly the dissolution of the monasteries – then gave the Palace to Henry in a last-ditch, futile attempt to stave off his master's rage.)

Camillas priceless expression when he cut infront of her shaking hands was hilarious

BluebellCrocus · 30/04/2026 20:55

Waiting for Trump to post a picture of himself with a crown and robes on

Several, I think. I have the Royal Family topic hidden, but there were some in Active at different points this week. The whisky industry will be raising a glass to the King, I'm sure!

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 01/05/2026 10:10

Interesting isn't it? I'm definitely no royalist but this was good stuff. I suppose with crass and brash fly-by-nights like Trumpington and JD you can dazzle them with history and gravitas because they're ignorant of it and easily swayed and impressed. So let's use it to the max while we still can.
