Does everyone have a decided view on Monty Don?.

I remember not long after starting a job about 10 years ago my boss he was always a really really lovely man, for some reason we must have been talking about gardening, and he said he disliked Monty Don. I was shocked because for one thing that current boss was very laid back and didn't have any extreme views on anybody and secondly, because I have no extreme view on Monty Don.

Just seen another thread where someone dislikes him. What is there to dislike about Monty Don? He's just a gardener isn't he?

How can anyone have a strong view on him ?

Legend. Listen to the podcast he's on with Giles Brandreth.

This is hilarious. Guy's never really crossed my radar, I'd say I'm indifferent towards him.

He seems mild and inoffensive.

People are different. I really dislike some celebrities that other people like; it doesn’t mean those celebrities are any less talented or that they aren’t nice people, I just don’t like them.

I’d listen to Monty Don, but Giles Brandreth’s voice, oh dear…

Yeah, this.
I really like Monty Don but I can't stand Ant and Dec.
Other people will feel differently.

DH and I are going to the RHS Malvern show next weekend where Monty Don is giving a talk, can't wait! (If we manage to get a space)

VeneziaJ · 30/04/2026 10:07

No strong views I tend not to dislike a “celebrity “ as I don’t actually know them. I make an exception if they have made a public opinion with which I disagree, such as for instance Lawrence Fox or Jeremy Clarkeson

Epicuriouss · 30/04/2026 10:09

I know he’s something to do with gardening 🤷‍♀️

ImportantMermaid · 30/04/2026 10:10

I don’t know much about him, but he was involved with the beautiful, beautiful gardens at our local hospice, and for that alone, I’m happy to give Monty a (green) thumbs up.

He inspired one of the very best Style and Beauty threads we’ve ever had here …

@FraterculaArctica - we went to an Audience with him last year and it was fantastic- he was very entertaining (he even dropped the F bomb 🤣). It was about his life in gardening though so maybe not the same as at a garden show. Hope you get to hear him!

Bigearringsbigsmile · 30/04/2026 10:17

I LOVE monty don. He's so soothing and gentle and was an absolute hotty when he was younger!

purser25 · 30/04/2026 10:20

He loves his dogs as well.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 30/04/2026 10:22

Adore Monty Don. I once bumped in to him at a Garden Show and I nearly came on the spot.

Wow! You mean people wanted to wear his stylish clothes? I'm struggling to imagine it

Yes that's a good point. Those dogs of his are gorgeous. That reflects well

Yes, and the money the dogs earn. A friend who works on the show says he asks, and gets, and appearance fee for his dogs! Believe it was £10,000.

Poulaphooka · 30/04/2026 10:31

A significant proportion of straight men have a giant crush on him.

KimHwn · 30/04/2026 10:31

Love Monty Don. My DH will age to be like him, I reckon, which I'm frankly gleeful about.

Iriseyes · 30/04/2026 10:36

I still would.

But honestly I'm not sure how anyone can dislike him. I suppose he is quite privileged in having a massive garden and being a successful TV presenter, so one could choose to hate him out of jealousy ?

NotDavidTennant · 30/04/2026 10:36

This reminds me of something completely bizarre and random I saw on the Reddit uk travel forum recently. An American couple were travelling to the UK to attend an event and were asking for advice on side trips they could do while here.

The event they were flying all the way from the US to attend was Monty Don live at the Reading Hexagon.

Pemba · 30/04/2026 10:40

I don't know much about him, as I don't watch gardening shows, but he seems pleasant. Actually he was hilarious as the host of Have I Got News for You a couple of weeks ago!

KeyLimeCake · 30/04/2026 10:43

Saw him on Have I got news for you the other week and I definitely thought better of him after it.
Had not really realised that I thought less well of him before.

OwlsDontGoToSchool · 30/04/2026 10:46

I’ve taken against him because he refused an interview with the magazine I worked on about 25 years ago about a charitable project he was working on, obviously that was completely his right, but I now have had a completely unjustified general dislike of him for much of his career!
