Can anyone recommend a simple, basic coffee machine?

I do like filter coffee, but I have never owned a coffee machine and have always just stuck to decent instant.
Always use decaffeinated anyway!

But I would quite like one now. I am baffled looking at the usual, popular machines, I don't know what half of the terms mean.

I don't need one that does all sorts of different things, and I don't want one where it'll cost me a fortune for the beans or extra accessories. I also don't want one that isn't simple to use as I am a bit prone to losing patience with gadgets if they're too fiddly.

I just want a very basic, small one.

Do they exist?

We had a Delonghi caffee corso bean to cup machine that we used daily without fail for 8yrs but it needed replacing. We downgraded to an espresso machine with separate grinder (I like fresh beans) which is a little faffing but just as nice coffee as the £300 machine produces. Our new machine and grinder were from Lidl and came to just under £100.

I use an Aeropress as it is cheap and easy to use. Makes lovely coffee too!

Thank you both!

It’s not a machine but I have a hario v60 drip filter and I adore it. Super easy to use and no fiddly bits to clean and it doesn’t take up any counter or cupboard space

Love my Aeropress! It's so quick and easy.

You could also consider a Moka pot. It makes espresso on the stovetop, and you add as much hot water as you like.

Wonderknicks · 29/04/2026 15:10

I'm happy with my cafetiere and a milk frother.

ExquisitelyDressed · 29/04/2026 15:13

We have a grinder and a stove top moka pot. We also have an aeropress and a cafetiere but the moka pot makes far better coffee than either of them IMO.

sunnylemontina · 29/04/2026 15:13

Moka pot is great and simple in that it is a single thing to use, but requires rinsing out and will take a good bit longer than anything coffee pod-like. But I still think it's great! Takes up very little room in the kitchen and no plastic anywhere near the coffee!

DH is the coffee drinker here, and he likes a proper brew. He has a little electric grinder for when he wants to use beans, but buys ground coffee otherwise, and then makes it in either a moka pot on the hob or in an aeropress (he has the aeropress for travel mainly). Very low tech but very easy and effective.

We have the Breville Barista slimline which I’m happy with. On offer at the moment, makes great coffee and doesn’t take up a huge amount of space on the worktop.

toastofthetown · 29/04/2026 15:21

I’m coveting the Sage Luxe Brewer, but it is on the pricier end. I think a lot of the basic filter machines work in a very similar way to each other so if you want an electric machine and aren’t too fussed about features then I’d just pick up one of them.

If it doesn’t have to be electric, I love my Clever Dripper. It’s really easy to use and clean, and makes reliably delicious coffee. There’s an ongoing cost of coffee and filter papers but they’re not expensive.

Ive used my aeropress now for about 15 years. It literally could not be simpler or easier to clean.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 29/04/2026 15:38

I just use a cafetière. Simple and easy to clean.

midlander79 · 29/04/2026 15:54

Thank you so much everyone for responding. I am quite liking looking through all your recommendations!

Easiest way to make coffee- thermos flask.
A dessertspoon of coffee per mug of water. Boiling water. Give it a minute, stir so the grounds sink. Let it settle. Hot coffee all day.

How has no one said Nespresso?
we love ours- we use cafe Nero pods in it!!

the milk frother attached is the best!!

Bestnottalkaboutit · 29/04/2026 16:57

Lakeland filter coffee machine for £30

Love mine! also use decaf, and set the timer for 10 minutes before my alarm goes off so it’s ready when I come down. Also had a Russell Hobbs one which was also perfect!

Bosch Tassimo machine. We have a Suny - but there are lots of others. They're not expensive to buy and just use pods. Simple!

midlander79 · 29/04/2026 22:02

Thanks again everyone, a good few viable options for me here. 🙂

Ninja is probably one of the most simplest machines ever to use. Press a few buttons and it does it all for you

I think the Bosch Tassimo is fantastic. The Kenco Columbian pods taste really good and come out rich and frothy every time. Only think is, the pods are expensive….!!

I have a sage bambino - https://www.sageappliances.com/en-gb/product/bes450?sku=SES450BSS4GUK1 mostly due to
limited space. If I had rooms I’d have one with a built
in grinder.
BUT…this has been the best thing I've ever bought, I dont
drink instant coffee now if I can avoid it. Also have found that the best coffee in the world is ‘highland roast’ from Inverness coffee company, available online for delivery. I buy the espresso to use with this machine which is basically pre-ground coffee.

Bambino - Compact Espresso Machine | Sage (GB)

I would like a cheap one that makes latte.
