Ultrasonic Barking Deterrents for Neighbour’s Dogs

DevilsKitchen · 27/04/2026 20:16

I’ve decided to train my neighbour’s dogs seeing as they clearly can’t be bothered.

We are trying to move but it’s not going well so the chances are we will have a newborn in his house and I won’t have them woken up by the incessant yapping.

I want to buy one of those ultra sonic bark deterrents - preferably the kind you put in your garden but a handheld button from the comfort of my bed will work fine. I want to get one that actually works though.

Has anyone done this? What one did you get?

You said you were relocating and I suggest you move someplace like Türkiye or Gaza where the population shares your values of hating animal lovers and dogs and in fact have active dog (and people) eradication programs.

Most Europeans appreciate our 40,000 year history with our most loyal domesticated companion. The occasional boisterous neighbour is not going to change this no matter where in Western civilisation you go.

It sounds like it makes no difference, really, that it’s a “bank holiday” to you since your sole activity is monitoring the adjacent yard. Maybe find some meaningful activities to take your mind off what other people are doing, which in this case sounds like a normal day off with kids and pets.

Every country in the world has laws to destroy nuisance dogs, and officials whose job it is to do so.

The kids here were out shrieking at 8.15ish this morning. My dog, who is so lazy that barking more than once every other week is an effort, didn’t stir until 10am. Hateful sod.

Audhdgirl · 04/05/2026 10:27

Yep we had the neighbours kids shouting in the back garden at 8:30 this morning. But, I I live amongst other people, it’s almost like if you don’t live in the middle of the moor you accept the noise of others - )note don’t move to the middle of the moor some pony will probably upset you then!) live in the middle of the Sahara I guess

But people can considerate to others - it’s a bank holiday and most people will be wanting a lie in

My dog is more important to me than your baby. Funny if they grew up loving dogs and you ended up getting one.

There is no way any child of ours will grow up liking dogs - and your dog quite simply doesn’t matter I’m afraid, it’s a ludicrous take to say it as important as a baby.

how much barking Are we talking about? I have a dog who barks sometimes if she hears unfamiliar noises in the garden - I let her get a get a few good woofs out at those times. I will be way less than 30 seconds, then in she comes. I would say that's a very reasonable and neighbourly way to be?

It was at least 15 minutes of constant barking, growling and subsequent shouting before 9am. This is addition to the 45 minutes last night where it was left to bark its head off in the garden.

You are just as selfish as you think your neighbour is. Because you have decided that the dogs will disturb a baby you don't yet have, you think it's completely reasonable to use a device that could cause their pets distress. This sounds like a you problem, and I think you're doing rhe right thing in moving, I hope to somewhere there are no neighbours.

By the way, ultrasonic devices won't have the desired effect. Neither will complaining to the council.

No they don't
Only dangerous dogs are given destroy orders.

I would gladly destroy them all except genuine guide dogs, police dogs and shepherding dogs. None of the others need to exist - they are a blight on society and a pointless strain on resources.

Their pets are arseholes and so are they - why shouldn’t I cause them distress? They are distressing to me!

Thats your opinion and not one that is held by the majority of people so tough luck.
Oh BTW how exactly do you intend to ensure your child hates dogs?

My husband and I both loathe them and have nothing to do with them - I grew up in a dog hating (read:hygienic) household. It’s pretty simple, monkey see, monkey do.

Instead of whining why don’t you do something constructive (and ethical) such as changing estate agents or reducing the price? These people and their dog aren’t going to change.

How awful. I don't have dogs but I sponsor Romanian dogs in kill shelters. I also give money to last chance dogs in the UK. My brother and his partner rescued a dog from Turkey. He got ill a couple of years later because he had been bitten by a tick over there and almost died. My brother had another dog - he died two years ago, he was completely devastated

And your child won't grow up liking dogs? I wouldn't be too sure of that

I think there's more going on in your life than just this issue - because we can all suffer because of neighbours. My neighbours are complete arses. They harassed the life out of me for a year when I moved in. Two of them have yappy dogs. I don't want them destroyed

Because it causes distress to any animal, how can that be OK.

What a waste of your money - you do know there are homeless people and starving children you could help instead?

These devices will cause distress to birds and foxes as well, other wildlife too

The OP better make sure the new house doesn't have neighbours with dogs. Maybe building a house in the middle of nowhere would be better.

Because you will get an asbo and all your neighbours with children and or pets will hate you.
There's legal routes that you can use to deal with your shitty neighbour which dont cause pain and distress to all animals and children within hearing range of your shitty device.

The plane fact is you hate dogs so think causing them pain and distress is a better option than having to declare a neighbour dispute but haven't considered what having an asbo on your record will affect your future.

I do help homeless people. It's really wise not to assume. I managed a homeless unit for five years and worked in several other homeless projects so it's always been something I care about

I give money to kids with life limiting conditions. I give money to the red Cross. I have sponsored kids abroad.

I raised 2k for the stroke association in memory of my gran when she died

It's actually not a waste of my money trying to help dogs that are having a miserable life in a kill shelter get to the Uk.

I also sponsor guide dogs and there's a local charity that matches dogs with blind people - I always give them a donation when they are collecting in a local supermarket

It really is wise not to assume what people do or don't do just because they've said that they help last chance dogs

Hilarious that this was directed at someone who spent almost twenty years working with young homeless people. Absolutely homeless people have dogs. There's a charity in London that helps street homeless people and their dogs

Have one arriving today so interested to see if it works.

Oh please don't! It drives babies, children, teens, birds and wildlife crazy as well as dogs. It's just adults who can't hear it.

DC used to hate visiting a close relative who was nothing but lovely to them. It was ages before we realised she had an animal deterrent. Although it was barely perceptible as a sound, it put them on edge the whole time and they couldn't articulate why.

But all of those “last chance” dogs could just be destroyed. Most of them are dangerous and unsuitable pets. It’s such waste of money and real estate to be keeping them alive - there are already far too many dogs.
