Child cannot weight bear on sore ankle, GP or hospital first?

Ezra123 · Today 08:03

Hi, I’m looking for some advice from the hive mind about what to do this morning please. Child with a sore ankle, unable to weight bear – she was running around in the garden last night and apparently twisted it (her dad was with her) and I was walking normally afterwards. This morning and hobbling about unable to weight bear. Ankle looks completely normal visually. Our nearest hospital is over an hour drive away, GP 10 minutes away. Assuming she still can’t walk properly after a bit of calpol I guess I’ll have to keep her off school… Just wondering which place I should go to for medical attention? If it was broken, it would be all swollen right? She wasn’t complaining about it last night.

Would be grateful for no snarky replies – I’m half asleep and I’m on the two week weight pathway for suspected cancer so my head is a mess at the moment

Do you have a minor injuries clinic near you? The GP will probably send you for an x ray anyway, so you may as well go to a hospital.

As above. Somewhere with x ray facilities whether urgent care or ED

Thank you so much for the rapid replies – I’ll try to find out if minor injuries has an x-ray machine. That’s about 30 minutes away. Hospital absolutely miles away! Will try and find that out first. Thank you again.

Agree with x ray.

111? Our 111 was really helpful in a similar situation and booked us into the local minor injuries clinic where they do X rays. Saved us a very long wait at A&E.

Minor injuries or A&E. In the meantime elevate and ice.

Thank you – I’ve managed to find out that minor injuries - which is very small - has an x-ray machine so we will go there :)

Minor injuries or urgent care. This isn’t an a&e situation.

StopGo · Today 08:50

Word of warning our local urgent care is appointment only. You call 111 and they make an appointment for you.
