Suggestions for female puppy names that are not too common

can anyone suggest some female puppy/dog names. Going to meet a puppy tomorrow, hoping to be ours. I have a name I love which is
Nyla, but DP isn’t really a fan, I’m working on it but in case he completely vetoes it I need some other suggestions. Nothing super popular like Bella, luna etc. my current dog is called ruby so that’s out the question aswell. I like the name Millie as well. I always struggle with girls names.

Has anyone said Megan yet?

A friend of mine has a beautiful weimeraner whose kennel name was Matilda something… She’s called Tildie and it suits her velvet, ladylike temperament.
For a chocolate lab, I’d have to go for Milka or Delta. Wouldn’t be able to help myself.

Kate is a good strong syllable

Practically dog names need to be able to be shouted at full volume and still be completely recognisable.
So two syllables. Second one a vowel.
Or
just one syllable but unusual if possible.
Eg. "Dixie" works the first way
"Vye" the second.
And you have to be able to stand in the middle of a park in the gloaming and shout it without getting arrested.

Also foods are a bit odd for dogs. Although standing in a woods shouting "Biscuit" at the top of your lungs is a choice.

This is how women in my family named their children

I heard them discuss it and I have one of those shoutable-outdoors names

My next dog will be a Roxy or a Darcy. Love both of those.

You def need a 2 syllable name for shouting at them. Though my older cocker spaniel must have thought his name was "you little shit" for his 1st 3 years....

I have a permanent list on the go for the next dog:

Flora
Florence nn Flo
Matilda/Tilda
Sylvie
Stereo Mike
Juliet
Mabel
Delphine
Bracken
Helena
Ember
Queenie
Lark
Loveday
Clementine
Glencora
Violette
Edith

Hallie- my favourite
Hattie
Callie

Two syllables, starting with a clear consonant, ending in a high ‘ee’ vowel sound - perfect for grabbing a dogs attention. Different sound from Ruby.

Practice calling them out and see what feels the most comfortable.

I always wanted to have a female dog and call it Laika after one of the Russian dogs who went to space. I was also keen on Zelda for my dog but was overruled on both by my kids.

If you want unusual, I would avoid Roxy, although it’s also a fab dog name, but it’s very common for dog atm, I know a cat called Roxy too. I’d also avoid, Daisy, Rosie, Bonnie, Poppy, and similar as all very common for dogs (all lovely names though).

Dogs often have human names these days, so maybe going for a non-human name. I know a female dog called parsnip for eg. which is very cute and unique.

there has been some great advice above about two syllable names with the second one a vowel. Also the “can you shout it in the park without sounding like a tit” test. Also could it be misheard?

Our dog is called Zola. We haven't come across another animal with her name yet 🙂

Is she a fast runner?

I would quite like to call a dog BANKER

https://www.medievalists.net/2024/11/dog-names-middle-ages/

Banker, imagine shouting that in the woods and someone miss hears you!
You could end up with a slap across the face.

That is funny, it was suggested to me before naming my baby, open the front door and shout it, you'll know if it sounds ok or not!!!

How many times do you think we've heard that 🤣 We had no idea until people asked her name and all we kept getting was, 'like Zola Budd?' Had to go home and google Zola Budd.
FYI, for a Collie, shes lazy and slow!
