Why are there so many SUV's on the road?

I've just had a wonderful cycle ride (we used to cycle a lot during lockdown but not since).
We really noticed how busy the roads were, which was unsurprising, but we also noticed that most people drive suv's now, which is a pita.
Why is this, and how do people afford them?

I don't care what other people drive, but i do care that those of us who prefer and love driving smaller cars now have hardly any to choose from. I want something nippy, easy to park, cheap to run, fun to drive, but there's so little choice now and I do resent that. No profit in smaller cars. ☹️

They feel safe and comfortable and are fairly robust particularly when it comes to potholes (certainly compared to our other car that has low profile tyres!).

No, the way you drive any car is more likely to do that.

My point is more dangerous to others IF they are involved in an accident. I didn't say SUV drivers are more likely to cause accidents.

People keep saying they like SUVs because they are "safe"? Safe for who...? They even cause danger when parked as it can be so hard to see past them if you're a pedestrian, cyclist, or driving a smaller car

What does PITA mean ?

@RavenT On what planet are you on? No choice of a smaller car? Absolute rubbish. There’s loads of them - look at What Car for inspiration if you have no idea! How many do you need to choose from? What a bizarre thing to think.

Planet earth. Manufacture of city type cars is declining, that's a fact, due to no profit margin. Fiesta, vw up, i10 being discontinued this year, Citroën c1, Peugeot 108 to name a few off the top of my head.

They certainly are a pain in the Ass, I live on a small road that’s a drop off & collect for a junior school, the damage they do by mounting the kerbs trying to park & pot holes caused by turning the power steering when stationary grinding away the road surface every day.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · Today 13:31

@RavenT Id try looking at the new ones on offer instead of backwards. Those are city cars with limited appeal. Try ordinary small cars and there’s loads!

Don't all modern cars have power steering these days?

We have 2 crossover SUVS. One smaller one , one slightly larger. We bought them, and we drive them because we want to.

We drive legally and always follow the highway code.

Also the assault rifle thing is a reference to the USA? People need to pass a NICS background check before the transfer occurs.
