Any life hacks to stop coughing and cold

There was someone in work last week with a cold. I got it now.

I feel dreadful. Not sleeping properly. It's not too bad to be honest. I am taking meds and drinking fluids. The pains in my head is not too bad.

The only thing that's killing me is a cough. It's dreadful. I am coughing to the point of nearly puking. It's so embarrassing too in public. Everyone looking as if it's COVID. I did a test by the way and it was negative.

Any life hacks to stop coughing. I am also due in work until the weekend after next so I won't get a day off until weeks away.

I just feel awful. Please help.

You can buy over the counter cough medication which contain codine to supress coughing.

Sugar free chewing gum - really helps to stop persistent coughing - seems to keep your mouth moistened in a way that cough sweets don't.

My GP used to be an anaesthetist and knows about airways! He said take paracetamol as often as you can and alternate with an NSAID. If your throat is irritated it thinks there's something in there to cough out. It worked.

My throat was sore but I am gargling with aspirin and I find that helps so much. Sore throat is not an issue now.

Just cough. I hate it.

i have this too, it’s awful and I’ve had it weeks. I’ve basically lost my voice (and my pelvic floor!) now.

there isn’t reallly anything you can do to stop the coughing, your airways are irritated. I agree with pain relief to relax it all a bit but it’s not going to stop it

Benylin max strength with guaifenesin or any cough mixture with it. Over the counter pseudoephrenine. Steam. Otrivine nasal spray. Lavender oil on a tissue inside your pillow. Vitamin c.

Rub in Vick on the bottom of your feet and put a pair of socks on, best done at night when you are asleep.

1 negative COVID test doesn’t mean you don’t have Covid it means at that point you didn’t have a big enough viral load to register a positive. You should keep testing until you feel better. Day nurse and Night nurse will sort you out.

You need sudafed to dry the nose to stop the drip which causes the cough.

BabyWally · 22/04/2026 18:27

Thank you. I stopped in a pharmacy on the way home to get a supply of stuff. Hopefully they will help. I got sudafed and solpadine for the codeine and hopefully that will help.

Jakemans cough sweets are excellent

I eat mints (extra strong mints, due to the texture). Suck them for a bit before chewing. It gives your throat something to work on rather than just coughing.

Second Vicks on the bottom of the feet at night no idea why it works but was recommended by adults with CF ( who know a thing or 2 about coughing!)

BoredZelda · 22/04/2026 19:07

I use kids benylin. Also, sleep propped up in pillows. For blocked nose, I use Otrivine. Next time, use Nasofed when you feel you are getting a cold.
