Where do you stay in London nowadays when coming from EU?

If you are going to be in London for a couple of days for work purposes or for a family event, and haven’t a huge budget, where do you stay?
Do you stay near the Chunnel exit and go up to London by train every day?
Or are there any budget hotels in London that are clean and basic but safe?
I am a female in my sixties so don’t want to stay anywhere too dodgy or too full of youngsters partying!

Where in London do you need to get to?

We often stay in a cheaper Premier inn on the tube such as Hangar Lane or Canary wharf. Sometimes the Earls Court one is cheap too.
