Worried about flights being cancelled

Latest news from Lufthansa. It's not good news.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cre1r4n5j5wo

A summer beckoning filled with much looked forward to holidays. I'm sure many of us booked before the war even started.

What do we think the situation will be come July/August? How worried should we be?

(I know there is bugger all we can do about it. I just want to discuss it with others that's all.)

God I hope it's not like covid again where we all have to go on holiday in the UK and spend £7K on a shitey airbnb in Cornwall...

Hard agree!!

I mean, haven't we been through enough in the last few years??

I’m going to the Philippines in 2 weeks with 4 flights in total. Worried about getting there and not being able to get back!

From the looks of it some airlines are cancelling some of the more obscure long haul flights so I imagine they are consolidating flights to save fuel

@Crunchymum it's not selfish at all we can all be very worried about bigger global events and our own lives especially if we are not wealthy enough to knock lost monies on the nose.

We have flights booked and separate accommodation but it's the wait isn't it. .my worry would also be getting somewhere but unable to get back.

Upstartled · 22/04/2026 16:44

I am almost certain that it should be fine but we've decided to drive to our booked holiday in Spain if the shit really hits the fan. Although I reckon my eldest might flag it and stay home if it comes to that.

RosieMilkJug · 22/04/2026 16:45

You have every right to be concerned OP. We were about to book a holiday for this summer but I am having grave reservations. If I did, I would book a flight/hotel package with an airline or via a travel agent. I got burnt with a DIY holiday in France when the French trains were on strike and the travel insurance didn’t cover strikes. We had to pay ££££££££££ for a Eurostar upgrade instead at short notice to salvage the holiday.

I should have changed my username to DebbieDowner or something - because what if (ha!) there is petrol fuel rationing by the summer as well?

KitsyWitsy · 22/04/2026 16:48

I am hoping something gets worked out. Me and my partner fly in and out Chicago/London and hope that is a busy enough flight to keep going. I don't see enough of him as it is. :(

LostThestral · 22/04/2026 16:48

We have a holiday booked for September which is a package holiday with BA so assume if it is cancelled they will refund us?

Bromeliads · 22/04/2026 16:51

I’m a bit worried about this too BUT I think there’s more going on at Lufthansa than just fuel shortages. They’ve been quite heavily affected by strikes I think.

My car is electric, so although that doesn't mean the we'd be completely insulated, we should be fine.

Yep, agreed.

Fuel will be a factor...not sure about supply but as far as price goes it would be interesting to know how well LH are hedged,.

Nevertheless the old management adage of "never let a crisis go to waste" might apply to some degree with the Lufthansa goings on:

"look, now will you believe there's a problem, we're cutting routes, how about negotiating rather than going back out on strike"

I'm also really worried - we've got a holiday booked in august to one of the Greek islands. Not a package -booked flights and Airbnb ourselves. I'm so worried that we won't get there at all and we'll lose all that money. Hadn't thought about getting there and not back but now I'm worrying about that too.

would that not be covered by insurance? or are some companies saying it isn't covered?

Only a very small number of insurers would cover this.

GoodNamesOnly · 01/05/2026 12:37

I'm getting a bit antsy too. I haven't booked yet, but was planning to book DIY holiday for August. Flights, few nights in an Airbnb and a week in Eurocamp. It doesn't look like I would get either Airbnb or Eurocamp back if the flights cancelled. Now it seems like it might be silly to book, since I haven't spent any money yet. But I want to go on the holiday 😫. A package holiday might be a safer idea...

Barrenfieldoffucks · 01/05/2026 17:17

A package holiday is likely to be covered isn't it? 🙏🏽

Weve all known this for a while when is the government going to tell us ,what exactly is going on

Simonjt · 04/05/2026 07:42

We’re going to Canada, well hopefully anyway, all of our stays are refundable until a few days before check in, so if our flights are cancelled it isn’t a disaster.

We had already decided not to fly anywhere this summer having had so many flights the last few years disrupted by strikes. Mainly Spanish ground crew if I recall correctly. On multiple occasions. Just got sick of the stress of not ever knowing how we were going to get home.

Gardenquestion22 · 04/05/2026 07:55

Booked a turkey holiday through a travel agent in February for September. Would usually have booked independently, it’s an Istanbul then cappadoccia trip, I’m now very glad I did it that way as they can sort out any issues. Going to book an additional week in uk as I suspect turkey might not happen.

Hopefulsalmon · 04/05/2026 07:56

I've booked a long haul bucket list holiday not as a package. Even if the flights are refunded I'll lose £££ - the money came from a windfall and I simply won't be able to afford it again. I hate Trump.

whattheysay · 04/05/2026 07:59

mantez · 22/04/2026 12:50

It's a concern for many at the moment and I feel for those who must travel to see loved ones, or are going on a longed for break.

I've a few things booked, but it's DIY. If my flights are cancelled, I'll either get a refund or an alternative flight, or some sort of voucher etc. In the worst case scenario I lose the money on the flights, but they weren't that expensive anyway. Easy for me to say as it's just me going! I can cancel the hotel up to a day or two before. I pay everything by CC and pay it off asap. It's just a bit of extra protection for a chargeback if it came to that.

No one likes uncertainty or losing a shedload of money AND a holiday do they?

If you booked your holiday diy and not a package you may struggle to get a refund from your credit card for the hotel part. There is nothing wrong with the hotel so they may not allow your claim if you have to cancel because of the flight.
