Rise in Fuel Thefts.

How selfish and stupid are people stealing fuel.
It was on the news earlier.
It's not free. How do they expect the garages to make any money?

Make people pay for their fuel before they put it in their car also.

What I dont understand is why filling stations are not all pay at pump which would put an end to this and deny criminals an income

I heard they like people to come into the shop and buy things .
Years ago they had an attendant, they put the petrol in and you paid first.
It was a service and didn't rely on your honesty either.

I was listening to an interview and someone who managed petrol stations said that pay at pump didnt affect his shop takings

Apparently for some people, the fine is cheaper than a full tank and it comes later. Don't know how true it is.

I'm not surprised this is happening. Especially with the rise of 'how dare most of it is tax going to labour we must make a stand' lot.

TempNameForObviousReasons · 21/04/2026 22:05

My heart just exudes blood for these poor petrol stations.

LlynTegid · 21/04/2026 22:06

No surprise. Fines are not the answer. Steal fuel and you should have a very long driving ban, and perhaps no passport for a period.

@gamerchick @LlynTegid

Fines are in line with sentencing guidelines under the Theft Act, which includes the statement that fines must not be cheaper than the cost of the theft

Someone who has stolen fuel as an individual (not a gang), of up to £200 (fuel tanks should still be within that unless a large tank), and without extra threat (eg if all pumps were pay at pump by default someone could force staff to switch on the pump with the threat of violence). …… A ‘standard theft’ caught for the first time would sit pretty much in the middle at medium culpability, category 2 which begins as a fine of 150% of their weekly income
Add to the criteria such as a gang, threat, theft > £200, and they are starting with a custodial sentance
