Recurring Dreams

Does anyone else have them?

when I was younger I had recurring dreams that my teeth were falling out. For instance my tongue would be going over the gums noticing how smooth my mouth was now there are no teeth there.

over the past couple of years I’ve been dreaming of failing exams or courses. Like I’d be going to an English exam very aware I hadn’t read all the texts for it. Or I’d be doing a course but knew I hadn’t done all the modules.

I haven’t studied for some years. I left school 40+years ago, qualified as a nurse 30+ years ago, and while I’ve done a couple of short OU courses they were several years ago. Apparently it’s due to a feeling of poor self esteem and ‘imposter syndrome’ which I’m guilty of to a degree.

anyone else?

Yes the teeth falling out dream here, often, including dramatic spitting-out of the teeth over a high up banister or stairwell Hmm

Finding rooms in my house that are up stairs I never knew about Hmm

Driving up a mountain into the snow line and then driving back down into a biblical flood Hmm

Sometimes the biblical flood contains yellow stripey swimming snakes Hmm

Oh, I frequently have the haven't revised or attended the lessons dream! Mine always relate to my A-levels for some reason.

I think it's generally an anxiety dream. Along the same lines, I also frequently have a trains dream - where I'm either on the wrong train and have to get off at a station in the middle of nowhere, I'm running late or can't find the right platform/have gone to the wrong one.

(I have a lot of anxiety!)

The exam one is a recurring dream for me too.

I dream that I’m sitting my finals at uni and I haven’t revised, so have no idea what to write on my paper. I’m always in the same exam hall with the same feeling of lack of preparedness!

I only have this dream when I’m going through a period of stress for whatever reason. I used to get it a lot when I was teaching full time and had a high workload. I also had it just before DD got married and I had a lot to think about prep-wise.

I’m not sure if this is relevant but I’m a highly organised and prepared person. I’ve never sat an exam and not revised for it so it’s not a familiar feeling, but I guess it is something I would absolutely hate to happen. One of the reasons I was stressed with my teaching workload was that I had v high standards for myself and wanted to be on top of everything, which is nigh on impossible in teaching. You have to learn to be content with ‘good enough’ for some things.

The dreams have reduced massively since I left teaching but I still get them once in a while and each time I know I’m feeling stressed for some reason. I’m pretty sure I don’t have low self esteem though, I think it’s just when I have lots to do or a tricky issue to solve.

Yes
getting lost in a building like a hotel / hospital
Having to walk home in the dark through eg a field
Having to move house
Brakes failing.
Unable to use my phone when out and can’t find friends / OH.
Partner not talking to me ( doesn’t happen irl)
Trying to run but I can’t.
all pretty self explanatory 😂

Most people have recurring dreams. Usually they come in clusters and then you can go for ages without them. Teeth falling out, being naked in public or being ill prepared or late for an exam/appointment are classic examples. It's because you're either consciously or sub-consciously anxious about something and it manifests as unpleasant situations that aren't generally based on real life experience. I have a recurring dream where I can only reach the pedals of my car with the very tips of my toes and my seat is leaning backwards so I can barely see out of the windscreen. I'm approaching a concrete wall, but due to the aforementioned I can't apply the brake in time. I wake up just as I'm about to hit the wall.

I knew the teeth one was common, I didn't realising the exam one was so common!

Apparently the one recurring dream where you really need the loo but all the ones available are filthy or impossible to use is to stop you wetting the bed!

I have had this dream more regularly than any other.
I'm sure I've had it and woken up not needing the toilet.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 20/04/2026 15:40

I used to have the teeth one. I often have ones where I’m late for work and just can’t get my phone or car to work or I’m at work but haven’t had a shower yet or am trying to find somewhere to wash my hair.

I have a dream that I've not been to any lectures for my degree and it's too late to do anything about it so I'm not going to get my degree (to be fair I wasn't that diligent about attendance but I did get a 2.1!)

RaraRachael · 20/04/2026 17:18

I have a recurring drem where I'm driving my car and it's in reverse. It keeps on going backwards and regardless of what I do, I can't get it to stop.

Lifesyoungdream · 20/04/2026 17:28

I have the exam one regularly and also finding a room in a house that I didn’t know was there.
I had a car dream the other night I couldn’t get it to move and was causing a traffic jam. I always wake up in a state of stress.

Papergirl1968 · 20/04/2026 17:55

I also have recurring dreams where I’m not in proper control of my car like I’m facing backwards and I can’t see where I’m going, and also I often can’t work my phone properly.
Or I’m inappropriately dressed in public, not naked but eg wearing nightclothes in the office.
But my most frequent one is that I’ve been staying in a holiday cottage and on the last day I’m nowhere near packed up and ready to go on time and the cleaners have arrived to do the turnaround and I feel under so much stress, and am rushing about gathering up my belongings.
i do have a lot of stress in real life, and a lot of uncertainty about my health, family problems, work, deciding when to retire etc, so I guess it’s all related.

Oh when I was in London I used to dream I was on the tube but was getting lost and ending up in random places. I lived in London all my life until 18 months ago, didn’t drive and used the tube to commute to work. I knew the tube like the back of my hand. I never got lost on it.

Have had this dream for years.

Having to drive a double decker bus around narrow, urban streets!
I've never driven a bus in my life!
