I love him. really. I DO..But right now I am shaking my head. We live in Dominican Republic. We have buying fish (red snapper) direct from fishermen off the beach for the last few years. Yes as we are in a tourist area , they are not cheap, but considering that they are really REALLY fresh and they gut and descale them, I am ok with the cost. My husband has bought TWO (not ONE) fishing rods as he feels we can do some early mornings at the ocean and take a cooler full of ice. I am SO not a fisherwoman. UGH just no. He thinks as we are retired , it is a fun (no) way for us to spend a morning out together , and we can save a fortune ,, this part is true as I spend about the equiv of 40 usd a week on fresh fish as we eat it 3 at least GOD help me. I do not want to fish!!

He'll soon get bored with that, and if he doesn't and actually makes a success of it: free fish.

In the meantime, you get rid of him for hours at a time. Win/win.

Just tell him no.

He should've checked with you first 🤷‍♂️

murasaki · 18/04/2026 22:51

Feed him to George the gecko! Slowly, in small bits.

oh I will tell him NO.. but the one part of me wants to make him not WANT me to go fishing.. maybe I will do it once and talk nonsense non stop. That will fix it haha. In fairness, the young lads fish late at night and early morning with nothing but a bit of string and a little tree branch, catch enough to sell to all the restaurants on the beach in the morning. I still do not want to spend time standing in the ocean holding a pole.

Are you just not an outdoors person at all or could you take a book with you and enjoy some fresh air, sunbathe, etc? If he'd happily man both rods and let you get on with enjoying some down time outside, it could be a sweet thing to do 'together'. If you're someone who's not into sending time outdoors and he knows this about you, it's a bit of an odd move on his part.

LittleGreenDragons · 18/04/2026 23:01

Forget the spades and patio. Send him to sleep with the fishes...

Could he be wanting to spend time with you?

good point Comealong. Maybe I should suck it up and enjoy it. He is really good company, but we are young retired , and spend alot of time together, but not really doing anything, just pottering around garden, reading in the pool. Maybe you are right. I am going to give it a go and not be a bitch, not going to natter in his ear. who knows.. maybe I will enjoy it.

I love being on the ocean, I head to the beach several times a week just to read and relax.. he is more a homebody so this has come from out of the blue. I really think it is a money saving thing for him.. free fish instead of buying. thats ok.. I am going to try it. He really is a fantastic husband, was amazing hands on raising our now very adult kids, did school trips with our grandmonsters when we still lived in Canada..and is actually flying up in 3 weeks to help our son move house.. So he is really a good man and maybe he deserves his wife to be a bit more accomodating. I will try it.

Do come back and let us know how you got on

And while you’re out there in the ocean with your pole, spend some time thinking of an activity you’d like to suggest you do together 😁

murasaki · 18/04/2026 23:12

Take a book, and give it a go, if you don't like it, you've got a back up. I'm all for try it once.

murasaki · 18/04/2026 23:14

Also, having been sea fishing on a rickety boat off the coast of west Africa, amd fishing really not being my thing, I got quite into it as a competitive thing with my ex on the day, and nothing tastes better than a fresh fish you have caught yourself.

It's not something I've ever felt the need to repeat, but it was good fun at the time. As I caught more fish than he did. 😁

ShowOfHands · 18/04/2026 23:16

Outwitting a fish is not a hobby, it's a form of punishment.

But hats off to you for indulging your DH!

momager1 · 18/04/2026 23:16

Ok. You have all convinced me to not be a grumpy arse and at least give it a go. I have no problem cooking it (do it anyway as I buy off the boys on the beach) but I REFUSE to clean them and descale them.

That's fair enough. One my one trip, the boys who took us out did one each for us to eat with them, cooked them over a fire in the beach, and took the rest of the catch home to their families. I wouldn't have degutted either.

Delphiniumandlupins · 18/04/2026 23:25

If your DH is not up for gutting and descaling he might be able to pay the boys on the beach to do it. You definitely don't want to get stuck with that task, it really turns me off eating fish. Have you worked out how many fish you need to catch before the tackle has paid for itself?

That's a quick turnaround from the shovel and patio idea 😄

the tackle is not high end so pretty cheap really, I think about 7000 pesos, so about 130 usd. I think that if he (we) catch 3 fish a week, it will have paid for itself in under a month.

Patio it is then.

Nobody's going to notice a fishing rod under there...

Springbuck · 19/04/2026 17:41

I’ve had a huge tree chopped down this week. The tree surgeons accidentally broke several of our patio slabs doing it. I am relaying the patio this week, so maybe I can help. Just have to work out a fool proof way of getting him from the Dominican Republic to the UK. 😀

Then I suggest in the circumstances a burial at sea is more appropriate than a patio.

Is there something you like that you can make him do with you? In the interests of togetherness…
