In city centre, where us cheapest for a decent takeaway coffee?

Big city. Not near a McDonald's, i know their coffee is ok. Is there a loyalty scheme with anywhere like pret/costa/starbucks/blank street that does cheaper coffee?
Any advice is appreciated.

Greggs?

I'd always try to find an independent shop rather than the chains. Our high st has an Italian run cafe and their coffee is the best I've ever had.

M&S coffee is nice and you get a free one every so often with Sparks loyalty programme. Gail’s has a loyalty programme as well as Harris and Hoole but quite expensive. Gail’s coffee is nicest.

Greggs has a decent coffee.

LittleMonks11 · 18/04/2026 10:22

Yes or just find an Italian restaurant and get a coffee to go. Can’t fail. I do this sometimes.

Hannaseed · 18/04/2026 10:23

Greggs.

Theresmagicwheretheflowersgrow · 18/04/2026 10:23

I like Greggs coffee and it's quick with no faffing about.

Tabbers79 · 18/04/2026 10:23

You can have cheap or you can have decent…

Lorrymum · 18/04/2026 10:24

Greggs.

Greggs has a decent coffee.

Greggs as above......we always head to them in a service station!

WoahThreeAces · 18/04/2026 10:24

If you are going to be doing it regularly then the Pret Club is worth it - £5 a month and half price coffees (max 5 a day)

As a one off then Greggs will be the cheapest (but not the best) and you might as well get a sausage roll while you are there too 😁

WoahThreeAces · 18/04/2026 10:25

Actually Pret do a filter coffee for a quid. And if you take your own cup you get 50p off.

mrsh2025 · 18/04/2026 10:40

goos Old spoons unlimited refills and actually ok coffee tbh

You can have cheap or you can have decent…

You can also have expensive & awful - unfortunately.

I don't particularly like Greggs, it's drinkable when really hot, but I'll only have it if it's the only option really, but she was looking for cheap not best.

theres a lovely independent in a small town nearby which I'll always choose if I'm there, or one at the Lake nearby (but still a drive) in my village, the independents coffees are awful so I go to a chain pub who do the nicest coffee out of the 8 choices if where to buy coffee! 🤣

If you have a Waitrose card, and a travel cup, free in Waitrose. Depends what city and where!

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 18/04/2026 20:02

Greggs

They'd regret that if my nearest wasn't 15 bloody miles away! 🤣🤣 if I ever had another 'in office' job (or moved??) I might need to base it on pret locations! 🤣🤣

Somersetbaker · 18/04/2026 20:29

Cheap and decent are words not often used in the same sentence, unfortunately expensive and crap are often used in the same sentence. In coffee terms you just have to accept that the chains make coffee for people who don't like coffee, but need to be seen carrying a takeaway because they are so important and rushed they can't sit down and enjoy a decent drink.

LividArse · 18/04/2026 20:45

Absolutely Greggs.

(If you have a Monzo Perks account you get one free per week.)

JacknDiane · 21/04/2026 12:35

Greggs looks like the winner!

Nothing wrong with Greggs or McDonalds. Costa, Starbucks and Nero certainly aren't any better despite costing around twice as much.

Independents might be 'better' but are definitely going to be a lot more expensive.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 21/04/2026 12:58

Greggs

AlcoholicAntibiotic · 21/04/2026 12:59

Pret. 99p filter coffee.
