Readly app issues

Hi, anybody that uses readly, have you had problems with it since updating to the new app? I’ve only managed to read a few magazines. Then they just have a spinning wheel on them and the pages don’t load. Just wondering if it’s my device or the app

I had a few issues too but restarted my pad and that seemed to resolve them. N

ok that seems to be working thanks. I managed to read a magazine after switching to airplane mode and back yesterday. Then the next magazine wouldn’t load. Let’s hope it’s smooth sailing now

I have had nothing but trouble with the new update on android, I can see the front page but clicking on it just gets an error message, tried everything they suggest and nothing works, their " support" just seems to be telling me what I already know and blaming me.

I can read it through a browser but it's crap.

8 years a subscriber and pretty close to cancelling it.

10 year subscriber here. My grumbles:
On the old app you could set a title to Auto Download new issues. That doesn’t seem to be a feature in the new app. It shows your saved titles have a new issue but you have to download it. I guess they are trying to reduce how many downloads they pay publishers for by only downloading issues you say you want to read.

Every magazine I have downloaded on the new app seems to come with a ‘only available in pdf’ banner across the bottom. So you can no longer click on links in articles and ads and be taken to that webpage. It was useful to have although sometimes I would accidentally click on a link when turning the page so at least that won’t happen anymore.

When the change to the new app happened everything I had downloaded on the old app disappeared. I had a couple of very old things saved. Not sure if the back catalogue on the new app goes that far. I also used to download some foreign language titles sometimes. I haven’t noticed they are still available although haven’t properly searched for them.

Overall it feels like less functionality is available in the new app. And possibly fewer titles. Although my app does seem to work ok and, compared to buying individual issues or subscribing to individual titles, it is still good value. I travel quite a lot on trains and planes and like having a lot of different titles/ genres downloaded to browse.

Yes I think I’m happier for it not to auto download as I had to keep emptying mine as my iPad memory is low. I’m just getting used to it a bit now. I’ve also seems the message about pdf. Waiting to see what it does when the new issues of the magazines I have saved appear and where they will be and how to access old ones. I need to spend some time properly looking over everything to see how it all works.

Does anyone use it on Kindle? It's like the app doesn't even exist anymore, it just takes you online and the reading experience via a webpage is absolutely dog shit 🙈

My update.

Android tablet, it appears the new update has failed to create a folder to store content. I have a 128gb card on the tablet but mounted as if it is all part of the internal storage.

Took card out, put another one in but set as separate storage, app sees this and permits me to save there. Now working but app is still crap and if I waited for their customer " service" to fix the problem I would still not be able to use it.

It has gone from 5 stars to 0 stars since the Cafeyn takeover.
The magazines are only viewable as clunky .pdf - the old app had loads of features beyond that. Some won't load and just "hang" with the loading screen (rotating circle thing) sitting there for 20 minutes or more
The search tool is useless and the catalogue is just a jumbled mess.
To cap it all, I can't open mags on Chromebook or Android phone.
I have just cancelled my subscription after 4 years of being a very satisfied customer. There are reviews out there (Trustpilot for Readly UK) that say users were refused cancellation via their online account and could not get responses by phone or email - a good reason I won't be going back - it looks like they treat loyal customers with contempt.
I feel that I have been ripped off - having paid nearly £13 for the last month and not being able to use it.

I just went to Trustpilot and yes the reviews are dire. They are being read and replied to by someone at Readly which is good as hopefully they will take all this negative feedback on board.

While reading all the 1 star reviews I realised something else that has now also gone. Because the magazines are all pdf format you can no longer interactively do the crosswords and puzzles found in newspapers. I used to like a weekend crossword. The response from Readly on the review was - ‘but we have a games tab on the app now’. But that isn’t my newspaper crossword!

imnottoofussed · 25/04/2026 16:51

mine no longer seems to mark the magazine with a green tick once I’ve read it. So now I’m left wondering oh did I read this one yet or not. And they still say new on the top even after I’ve read them.
