Why are so few Americans openly challenging false statements from the White House

UnitedStatesofShame · 17/04/2026 13:16

Why are the majority of Americans not protesting or questioning the avalanche of lies that are coming out of the White House?

Don't they care? Are they afraid?

If Starmer told the amount of lies that Trump does it would be splashed over every UK headline....

I think you’re not looking very hard if you genuinely think this.

Nellietheolophant · 17/04/2026 13:20

Trump may be down in the polls..but many many Americans support him.

Great username. Are you being goady? Many Americans are protesting Trump and his lies. We are in a unique situation at the moment similar to when you are in a natural disaster like an earthquake and you emerge from your house and you all look around in disbelief.

I believe that we are at a tipping point where fear and disbelief are moving into the background and anger and action are taking up position in the foreground.

What a silly post

Have you just woken up from a long sleep or is it that you've only just decided to take an interest?

If you really, really want to be better informed, mosey on over to the long running Trump threads.
And if you didn't even know they existed, what makes you think you have any idea what's actually happening in the US? 😂

DripDripAprilshower · 17/04/2026 13:48

I’d stop believing everything you see on the internet

Shallotsaresmallonions · 17/04/2026 13:48

Slightly more diplomatic thread title than your last one! So well done for that, I guess.

The Pope is American and he's made a couple of comments...

There was a headline in the FT this week. "Pope versus Trump".

It's a shame Celebrity Deathmatch isn't on TV anymore.

You think Starmer would be in power still, if he posted a pic of himself as Jesus?

I'm angry at what the orange shit has done to the world. Particularly poorer countries whilst lining his own pockets

American here, people are definitely not believing this crap. But short of showing up to protest rallies (and they do in huge numbers) and posting on social media, what else can the average person with kids to raise and a FT job do?

I don’t live in the US anymore, but certainly early on, I emailed my senators and representatives regularly. The emails just result in template emails about how they support Trump’s policies (I vote in a traditionally red state as that is where my family is from). Until they get voted out (and I do vote in every single election as a dual national overseas citizen), nothing much is going to change as they are up the president’s bum.

Day to day though, people are trying to keep their jobs in very difficult economic times, pay for their healthcare, get the kids to school, pay for ridiculously expensive childcare (summer camps easily $1000 a week and there’s like 12 weeks of summer holidays for some schools). People are trying to survive. There isn’t always energy after that for rebellion. But most people think it’s absurd bullshit, yes.

Carouseloflife · 17/04/2026 13:56

Populism is slowly dying a death so I wouldn’t worry too much about Trump

Have you been to the US recently? Have you not seen the No Kings protests? Have you not seen the thousands of FB/tiktok etc accounts about how dire it is? Have you not seen any (if not all) comedy/talk shows/opinion pieces es on US television deriding the current politics? I have. There’s plenty out there, believe you me.

He's a bit out of range from here.

I don’t think there’s much an individual can do at this point. Ride this out and elect someone different in 2.8 years.
In a recent, on the street interview of 3 people approached; one believed someone else posted the Jesus photo, one believed he was depicting a healer “laying hands” and the third was upset.
So only 1/3 bothered.

Trump was voted into power by American people, now they know what they voted for. Personally I don’t think the majority of Americans are in agreement with his actions and comments.
