How does company sick pay work?

My company pays 3 months full pay and then 3 months half-pay for sick leave within a rolling 12 month period.

Does that mean that if someone is off for 18 months then they would get full pay again for a further 3 months?

Unless it specifies that it also needs to be a new sickness period, then yes, I'd expect the payment would be repaid once it had "expired"

I’m coming up to 18 months next month so I guess I should check with HR. It seems a bit cheeky really to ask

From what you say about the rolling period, I think you’d need to be back at work for 12 clear months before payment would start for another new sick period. So in effect for each day you attend work, one of your 18 months of sick drops off and after 12 months of solid work, you’re back to a fresh start having had no sickness in the last 12 months if you see what I mean. That’s how it works where I am.

Where I work, that would not happen. We get 12 months sick pay, but you need to be back at work to “earn” another 12 months.

If you had been back at work for 3 months after 18 months sick and looked at the previous 12 month period you'd have worked 3 months and been off sick 9 months - so you wouldn't be entitled to anything until you had 6 months back at work and then it's going to be half pay for each day worked till you get to 9 months back at work - 12 months back at work would see your record clear.

I’d imagine you’d need to be back at work before the full pay was applied.

This is the answer.

Each day of absence, look back over the last rolling 12 months. The amount of absence you've had in that period needs to be deducted from the entitlement.

If you are off on 1 May 26, count all the absence you've had since 2 May 25. if you'd had used all of your 3 months half and 3 months full in that, you won't be eligible for any more payment.

I think if it didn't require you to beach at work, you'd have started receiving payment after 12 months - because after 12 months and a day, youve had less than 3 months full sick pay in the previous 12 months.
So, i think yoyr company has a clause about returning to work before sick pay restarts.

OK, thanks everyone. I thought it meant that I was eligible for sick pay again when I hadn’t had any sick pay for a full 12 months even if I had been off sick for all that time.

It would be the first 3 months of sickness, in a period of sickness.

You need to clarify with HR. I got my full pay for 9 months until my contract ended and then they essentially made me redundant and gave me a payout, which was probably 4 months salary at the time.
