Unexpectedly grown-up tasks I have dealt with today

Grown-up things I've done today:

  • Untangled bunting with the window cleaner.
  • Double-bagged two halves of the dead rat my cat dragged in and put them in the outside bin.
  • Did my sore shoulder exercises as recommended by the physiotherapist.

These are not activities I'd included in my visions of adulthood as a child.

What did child-you think was involved in being an adult? I always thought it looked quite boring, other than being able to buy and eat all the French fancies I wanted

Morepositivemum · 16/04/2026 21:42

Unclogged a toilet- sigh!!

newornotnew · 16/04/2026 21:42

Told I needed a double knee replacement and spinal fusion at 43. Not the plan dudes

Gingernaut · 16/04/2026 21:45

Buying off ebay

I never thought I'd be deliberately buying second hand goods

Squirrelchops1 · 16/04/2026 21:47

A 2 part adulting job. I purchased jeyes fluid as I need, tomorrow to disinfect the gravel where the dog has been peeing as I realised whilst in the sun that it's a tad whiffy.

begonefoulclutter · 16/04/2026 21:47

Submitted Year-End figures to our accountants.

Made a large chilli con carne and neatly labelled many portions for the freezer.

Learned the choir part of Nessun Dorma (in Italian).

Discussed our van's MoT requirements with DH.

swingingbytheseat · 16/04/2026 21:47

spent the morning on the phone talking to Barclaycard & transferring over my debt onto a lovely 0% balance transfer. Satisfyingly dull

BeMellowAquaSquid · 16/04/2026 21:48

I browsed the Lidl catalogue and contemplated a pair of their own brand sketchers

Gowlett · 16/04/2026 21:49

It was all a bit of a laugh until my mid-40s, which isn’t bad going TBF. When I was a child I always dreamed of being a sophisticated laydee, the sort who buys posh make-up in the Duty Free, commutes to NYC, wears cream linen blazers & such-like…
I’m 50 now, so sorting out my pension!

How awful for you, I have mid stage Parkinson’s at 63, not what I had planned or being single for 25 years, not choice, life is unfair

So do I, does it really matter tho?

A lot more swanning around in fancy clothes and eating unfeasible amounts of whatever I wanted, and a lot less housework and random aches and pains.

Well today I went mountain biking, had a hot chocolate and read my book snd I've just had a bath so quite similar to my childhood really.

I suppose the unexpected bit was eating guacamole, child me would be disgusted.

Statsinyoureyes · 16/04/2026 22:15

Cleaned child's vomit out of car and took apart and washed all the child car seat inserts

Did an 800 calorie fast because I am enormous and old

Made a groaning noise when standing up because see above

It is what it is. I’m alive. I’m sorry for your diagnosis, wishing you peace ❤️ and no, life isn’t fair

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 16/04/2026 22:34

Went to therapy, childhood me would have asked what the hell that was.
kind of wish I still didn’t know.

FamingolosForDays · 16/04/2026 22:41

Pretended to be a professional at a meeting today (I am actually a professional, but I still feel like a thicko some days!)

Build a bed with my teenager. (Successfully with no arguments) 🤣

pothygh · 16/04/2026 22:48

Cleaned up dog sick.

03cg73 · 16/04/2026 22:51

I mopped the bathroom ceiling/walls after my Labrador gave himself a full body mud treatment and decided to shake himself before I managed to wrestle him into the shower

DesolatedCheese · 16/04/2026 22:53

I collected my late mum's will from a solicitor and made plans to financially secure my little brother.

Had my 3rd go at removing a massive sick stain from DD's bedroom carpet...

Had follow up blood tests for my aching and exhaustion.

A day of all the crappy sides of adulthood.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 16/04/2026 22:58

Cleaned cat sick off the carpet and logged on to parent pay at 2pm to get my dd on a school trip all the time hoping this wouldn’t be the moment my boss chose to show me something she needed to show me

Muteduck · 16/04/2026 23:37

I dont want to be an adult anymore, i want to go and play.

maudelovesharold · 17/04/2026 00:04

I remember saying to my then 16 yr old ds, who had intimated that he wouldn’t wish to live the life of drudgery that we were modelling, that most people had jobs not because they liked them, but so they could pay the bills, and that 80% of life was a grind.
He is now nearly 32, and on the treadmill like most of us. Makes me really sad that I felt the need to try and burst his bubble then. Life does that for you very efficiently.

canuckup · 17/04/2026 02:35

Renewed a library card

Bagged up a massive pack of Costco chicken

Researched upping private insurance in order to get certain drug coverage
