Are these stitches ok and not infected? Pic included

Do these look ok? My finger is still really sore 4 days after surgery. The surgery was to remove a tumour from the tendon sheath and it was also on the nerve.

The finger and surgery site is painful. The finger is numb due to the nerve irritation but the wound feels really sore. I took the dressings off to have a look as it felt so throbby I wasn’t sure if it was Infected.

Any nurses / doctors around that can say if they look ok? Thank you ☺️

District nurse here- looks great.

Fatiguedwithlife · 16/04/2026 20:21

look out for inflammation/ redness/ heat/ swelling/ discharge as signs of infection

Fatiguedwithlife · 16/04/2026 20:22

Keep elevated and take pain relief as required, a gentle ice pack (covered with a cloth) might help too

Things to look for are: is it more swollen than before? Is it more painful? Does it look red? Does it feel hot? Any pus on the dressing? Any tracking from the wound (pink wiggly lines)? Do you have a temp/feel flu like?

WinterNightStars · 16/04/2026 20:24

I'm a practice nurse & agree it looks great. Keep an eye out for heat/redness/inflammation/discharge.

Oh amazing thanks, I will look out for those things. The nerve pain is so annoying, like a pulsing, itchy, tingling - it also feels burning so its hard to know if it’s just the pain of the surgery or whether the wound is healing ok.

Sounds like a pretty invasive procedure, not surprised it's still sore. Really good advice above to elevate and cool to relieve some of the swelling (inevitable after a surgery) which will be contributing to the pain and tension.

I'd be taking paracetamol on a schedule if that was my finger, +ibu if it's safe for you. But no signs of infection in the photo-- ring your surgery if the pain seems to be increasing rather then improving over time. Hope you feel better really soon Flowers

You might be able to get different painkillers specifically for nerve pain if what you've got isn't helping, I had to have them after having shingles as the burning/tingling/crawling feeling didn't go away for ages.

Another nurse, looks good. No concerns

I recently had surgery on my hand and your stitches look like mine - all good! My hand healed very nicely.

Thanks all, you’ve all been so kind. Yes, it was a small but tricky surgery. I has nerve block injections too as it was done as a day surgery while I was awake.
The injections for the nerve blocks are something I would hope never to have again, they’ve left my hand so tender too. A tiny surgery but so uncomfortable!

Ouch, is that a tendon repair? Have you been told not to type or drive for two weeks? I haven’t worked since Monday, I feel an absolute fraud, it’s only an inch long

@Checkpoint2 no, for carpal tunnel syndrome. Surgery was fine, although weird being awake while it happened!

Afterwards the main pain was actually caused by swelling from the tight bandage, I took it off early (after 4 days) and it felt much better. Not sure if they made it over tight but my fingers were really swollen and my knuckles went red.

Op was done before Christmas, it's all healed up now. I don't drive actually, so I can't remember what they said about driving. I did work, but a colleague who had the same op had 2 weeks off 🤷 and I probably shouldn't have worked, so I wouldn't worry about being a fraud x
