My FIL honestly believes Trump was saved by God when that bullet didn't kill him and has since turned to religion because of this.

This is an Ivy League educated man who was always very cynical about religion, so to come to this now in his 80s (to me and DH) is wild.

Keepoffmyartichokes · 18/04/2026 06:44

My MIL believes aliens live inside the moon and fly out of the far side of it. She's seen this in some 'documentary' apparently

The belief in "medbeds" is the modern equivalent of the Rife machine.

I've not heard of that. I'm behind the times.

"Their youthful looks" Grin

Considering how badly the Windsors age (especially the men), I'll be giving the babies blood a swerve 😌

I mean they're is a grain of truth in it I suppose. Maybe not on the scale your mum thinks, thankfully

I think this is the problem with conspiracy theories now we have social media. I started by joining in the conversation and trying to discuss the possible advantages and concerns about what ARIA, not the Met Office, are researching. But mum just got really annoyed because she had watched a youtube video with a farmer pointing up at planes saying that they are all doing it over his fields. Me not believing the random farmer and his rants about the Met office meant that I am 'one of them', as she put it. She just watches all the suggested videos and doesn't understand that people can put what they want to on YouTube, it's not always fact.

This is the update on the ARIA research

"research"

Conspiracy loon code for "pollute your brain with the same totally unqualified internet shite I have".

Yes exactly. He sends my husband all sorts of "proof" in the form of articles - all from his dodgy sources. Of course he doesn't trust anything the mainstream media says, but he believes everything his "research" tells him.

These theories veer widely all over the place over time. I can't keep up with what he believes as it keeps changing. He currently thinks that Trump is dead and being played by an actor, but a few years ago he thought he was the 2nd Messiah, then he was a time traveller, then a lizard (he beliethe same about all politicians and the royal family). For a while Russell Brand was a guru, now he is one of the lizards.......

I only see him a few times each year and I don't engage with him on any of it. His adult daughter is estranged from him as she is fed up being told she is basically stupid.

Chem trails, vaccines, birds with cameras in their heads, ulez is illegal, taxes are illegal........he is so down the rabbit hole he will never get out.

Has he mentioned the Jaimie Foxx replacement theory one yet? That's a banger.

They live amongst us and the fact they can hang out online with other people who think the same makes it all worse.

We got out of the taxi and my DC turned to me and said “That man is WEIRD, right?” which I thought, at age 7, was remarkably astute.

60andcounting · 21/04/2026 14:47

There's also a conspiracy about the way celebrities etc hold their hands which has something to do with the Illuminati..

I know a very professional, eloquent, articulate couple who believe that the earth is flat and covered by a dome. The moon isn't real, it's plasma. It's all to to with the Rockefellers and Rothschild's.. just follow the money. Apart from this they are both really nice people.

southerngirl10 · 22/04/2026 08:48

Andrew's brother is not descended from Dracula, or Vlad the Impaler. Oh wait, just googled it. That one is true.

Cosmication · 25/04/2026 06:44

Arran2024 · 17/04/2026 23:11

My brother in law is into all the conspiracy theories. He keeps telling us to "do our research". Big news is always just around the corner - nothing he forecasts ever happens but it doesn't seem to discourage him.

Yes 'big news' is around the corner. It's going to be announced 'soon'. And when later questioned on why it hasn't happened yet:
"Oh it's already happened. They're trying to cover it all up".
Who is trying to cover it up?
"The government and MSM".

(This is the same government that has already been 'replaced' btw. None of the politicians are real. Royal family are lizards)
It's been going on for years

"They're just waiting to get rid of Obama/Biden/Starmer. Just wait, it will all be announced"

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 25/04/2026 07:21

@HowardTJMoonJustines law 🤣🤣🤣 love it, so true.

I was going to start a separate thread on this but the Princess Catherine Is Dead rumours were interesting. Why? Because a) They were disproved, and many of us had to eat humble pie as it turned out she had cancer so that was why she wasn't doing public appearances b) There did seem to be malevolent actors at work - remember that odd public appearance of Wills and Kate at a local garden centre? Was that really them anyway? There was a supposed close-up done showing Kate's face to be totally different, but that was a deep fake done on the person to mislead. And c) The Mother's Day shoot of Kate with her kids was said to have been photoshopped to the nth degree. But, well, was it really? I mean, she was alive, she hadn't lost her hair... Did she look rough? They wouldn't have needed to photoshop it, presumably. So I don't know, did anyone really photoshop that picture then? Were we all being led by the nose?

One could argue it is similar to the recent Epsom 'gang rape' which led to all manner of public demos and disturbance, news of the ethnicity of the attackers kept from us so it could only be suspicious - only now it seems there was no gang rape, or rape at all.

The argument being that it's a set-up by the State to get the riff riff going, so they can then be shown to be wrong and stupid.

I know someone that went full Qanon in lockdown, our relationship has never been the same. She's also spreading chemtrails misinformation on FB.

Oh same here! The big man is saving us. Blocked me last year on SM when I posted saying how Trump is epsteins best mate lol.

this lady is older than me and a professional . How embarrassing for her that she blocked me. How sad to be taken in by shit like this.

IMissTheLittleBluePackets · 17/04/2026 15:36

Ah! This is really interesting. I've never actually discovered a justification for the flat Earth conspiracy before and this explains it. Religious literalism.

On the Chemtrails front though, that could become a reality soon: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/apr/22/uk-scientists-outdoor-geoengineering-experiments

yeah geo engineering is a thing. Weird how some on mumsnet still think there is no technology being used for weather modification. it has been talked about. Interesting stuff

KStockHERO · 17/04/2026 14:41

My mum lives on YouTube and believes all kinds of conspiracies.

I was telling her about a Flat Earthers documentary I watched recently.
I was being very light hearted and saying what absolute nutjobs they were.

She got all huffy with me and it turns out she "has some doubts" about the Earth being round. So that's fun.

😂😂😂

I'm surprised that so many 'normal' people think that the moon landings were fake. Like it doesn't take much so weigh up the available evidence on both sides and come to the conclusion that it was a thing and it did happen. The arguments against are pretty weak.

I think the moon landings one is interesting. I know a few people who don't believe they ever happened. I can sort of understand the arguments against them, such as the lack of computer power available back then, among other things. But the one thing that makes me think that they DID happen,is that surely someone would have spilt the beans by now, if it was all faked? There was so many people involved with the whole project,I find it hard to believe that at least one person wouldn't have told all by now?

Because there's a huge gulf between "small, isolated cloud-seeding to trigger rainfall has happened" and "governments are running long-term, massive covert operations where thousands of flights are dumping huge amounts of chemicals in the sky to block out the sun". Which is what the chemtrail conspiracy nuts claim.

HRTQueen · 27/04/2026 18:46

That there is a kingdom under the Antarctica that people still live in. They are human but very different to us and only the Russians and Americans know about them

Apparently they shall be kept secret. Not sure how my friend knows

minou123 · 27/04/2026 18:50

Before it was shut down, I had a look at the QAnon forum. It was fascinating.

The conspiracy theory was how the covid vaccine was engineered to make white men infertile. Only white men.
They were convinced 'they' were trying to eradicate white people.

It got better

So, these men decided they had to freeze their sperm. They looked into sperm banks, but it was too expensive. So, they gave each other hints and tips on how to freeze sperm at home in the freezer.
Tupperware vs freezer bags
How much to, well um, produce
Its own draw or with the frozen peas and pizza.

I had a very entertaining afternoon.

Absolutely! Plus as the Cold War was a big driver behind America’s space programme in the 1960s, surely the Russians would have been tracking what they were doing and would have let the world know that the moon landings were fake
