My mum thinks that the Met Office fly planes over fields to fill the air with dust to block out the sun. She first started talking about this after last year's Spring with its record breaking hours of sunny days so the Met Office aren't doing a very good job.

I never undestsnd flat earthers ,for what possible reason do they think we are being lied t?
And if we found our the earth actully was flat what difference would it make to most peoples lives ?

If you take certain passages in the Bible very literally it suggests the earth is flat and covered by a dome-shaped firmament. So if you "know" the earth is flat that "proves" the Bible is true which "proves" that God exists. So there's a vast conspiracy to pretend the earth is round so that the truth is the Bible is suppressed.

My ex husband believed in a lot of really quite wacky conspiracy theories most of which I (thankfully) can’t remember the details of but one that stands out in my mind was something to do with tunnels under the earth that giants lived in that somehow also had something to do with the ancient Egyptians.
I think the Ancient Egyptians featured quite a lot.
I also went on a really interesting tangent not long after we split of trying to find the origin of as many of his theories as I could after accidentally stumbling across what seemed to have been the origin of a reoccurring theme of them in a book about anthropologists.

I’ve heard this before too but not sure where? I think aliens featured in it too somewhere?

Nellietheolophant · 17/04/2026 15:30

There was an alien abduction in North Wales.

Cosmication · 17/04/2026 15:32

That practically all the politicians that run the Government are not real. They've all been 'replaced'.

the80sweregreat · 17/04/2026 15:32

Alien abductions were big in the 80s, mostly in America on lonely roads and people being ‘ probed ‘ then returned to their cars. Seemed to be one in the papers every week.

OneTimeThingToday · 17/04/2026 15:34

Im pretty sure my teenager believes that school was invented just to torture her.

Replaced by people who are all pretty useless !
Maybe that isn’t so hard to believe..

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 17/04/2026 15:35

A friend of a friend pops up sometimes on Facebook telling us that "they" have changed the weather because when we were younger, Bank Holidays used to be sunnier.
He also thinks climate change is a hoax.

And he hangs cloths dipped in white vinegar on his washing line when there's "chemtrails" in the sky over his house, because the vinegar fumes dissolve the chemtrails.

Ah! This is really interesting. I've never actually discovered a justification for the flat Earth conspiracy before and this explains it. Religious literalism.

On the Chemtrails front though, that could become a reality soon: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/apr/22/uk-scientists-outdoor-geoengineering-experiments

UK scientists to launch outdoor geoengineering experiments

Blocking sunlight could temporarily slow the climate crisis but the technologies remain highly controversial

the80sweregreat · 17/04/2026 15:39

I read an article online ( daily mail) around the blocking out the sun by chemicals and how it’s costing millions.
It sounded credible to me, but no real idea.
We had three heatwaves last year in the uk , but people say it’s working.

I know a flat earther. He also wont hold his phone to his ear because he doesnt want brain radiation.

I know two people who are anti vaxxers and have refused their children’s vaccines “because they cause Autism.”

Wild.

I know one too, she was like this from a young age and ironically went on to have a child with autism. And still won't vaccinate them or their siblings. She still holds strong.

the80sweregreat · 17/04/2026 15:46

Bank holidays were always wet and horrible in my day !
Maybe depends on where you live, but British summers were pretty unpredictable and rainy in the 70s ( then we had the 1976 summer )
I think they have got hotter , but the mind plays tricks on us!

They should be introduced to my family member who is convinced that contracting Covid caused his child's autism and he would have been fine if he'd been able to have him vaccinated. His evidence for this is that before the child contracted Covid (aged less than 1 year) he showed no signs of autism and there is no autism in our family or his partner's family. Family member claims to have done 'extensive research' and concluded that autism can either be inherited or triggered by something like an illness or trauma. Since there is no autism in his family, the latter must be true. He is convinced that the Government are covering this up to avoid being sued for not vaccinating young children as a priority and because if it were widely known they would have to keep testing people and have lock downs/quarantine people etc which is very expensive.
Just as an unrelated observation the family member making this claim has no ability to interpret social cues, says he can't wear a suit because the trousers are always too itchy and ties make him think he's being strangled, and has a long list of 'rules' for food and drink that he will and won't eat.

TheAutumnCrow · 17/04/2026 15:51

And if we found our the earth actully was flat what difference would it make to most peoples lives ?

Well, for starters, it would mean that every nation of earth has been working together at the highest level to collude in a lie about the existence of their space progammes, rocket testing programmes, high atmosphere weather balloons, the ISS, and the photographic and film footage taken from all these events, projects and programmes showing the curvature of the earth.

But worse than that, it would mean that Katy Perry lied to us about being an astronaut.

😆

Mt563 · 17/04/2026 16:29

Lovely farm b&b we used to stay at will no longer take people who have had the covid vaccine because they don't want them shedding the vaccine all over the animals.

Shame, it was a lovely place.

I hate to sound really dim, but how do they know ? Do they just hope that people are honest about it ?

There was an alien abduction in North Wales.

We had this not a million miles from me -

Interestingly, the trousers he was wearing have been preserved, and last I head they were in the possession of National Museums Scotland pending a UFO-themed exhibition. 😀

I know a woman who is convinced that Brigitte Macron is actually a man. Nothing anyone says to the contrary will persuade her otherwise.

If they live in the South East of England they’re getting through a shit ton of vinegar!

They have got hotter. The Met Office show a statistics chart for the summer temperatures (sorry, I had a look for it online but can't find it!) and the summer of 1976 has fallen off the chart - all the hottest summers on record have been since then (and, iirc, in the last ten years).

PersephonePomegranate · 17/04/2026 17:40

I find flat earthers very amusing. Theres absolutely no benefit to any government convincing their citizens the world is a sphere, it's completely pointless!

Other favourites include the royal family being lizards and Michelle Obama us really a man called Michael.

That's just reminded me. My friend sent me something about this last week (laughing, not propagating!).
