What should my partner wear for a council job interview?

Partner is going for a job interview for park warden type job in the local council.
Just thinking about interview attire.
I'm thinking that very formal attire - shirt and tie - is not necessary for this level of job these days? I have no idea what men wear for interviews these days nor does partner as he has been a self employed gardener for the last twenty years!
So how about black smart trousers, plain black (but not formal) shoes, nice plain (light blue?) but not formal shirt and no tie? Does that sound OK?
Thanks

And he has a 'smart casual' cream/stone coloured jacket that he could wear on top?

We interview for local council gardeners/fly tipping operatives.

What you have described would be perfect.

In this day and age we wouldn't expect our staff to have interview suits.

We have interviewed staff in track suits and tshirt. (They did get the job) but I wouldn't recommend it.

We are very keen on responses to questions on health and safety, discrimination and teamwork.

Good luck
