What can you do since you've lost weight that you couldn't do before?

I've lost over 30kg in the last few years (the boring way, can't afford jabs!) and I've discovered things that I can do now that I couldn't do when I was bigger. I don't just mean feeling fitter generally or getting smaller clothes, I mean things like I can now sit on a chair with my legs crossed above the knee, and fit through gaps I couldn't have before!
Anyone else noticed things like this??

Oh yes. Sitting with my legs crossed, which I now do all the time. Sitting comfortably on the floor, and getting up easily, I can even jump up rather than having to clamber. Fitting in public transport seats, even those narrow hard train seats. Fitting in theatre seats. Running. Not getting sweaty when running or walking. Pass people on staircases without them waiting for me to get to the next stairwell. I can also sit on my office chair with my feet drawn up off the floor and on the seat next to my bum, if that makes sense? Probably loads of other things!

Helpmechooseausername · 15/04/2026 20:49

Oh yes to some of those as well, especially the one about other people waiting for you to pass! I really don't mean for this to be a gloating post at all, and I'm sorry if it came across like that, I just wasn't expecting some of these things!

My life has changed immensely since I lost 7 stone. I can walk again. I walk my dogs. I can exercise. I can buy clothes in shops. I can get off the floor easily. I can get dressed standing up, put socks on standing up. I don't have to worry about fitting in cinema/theatre seats. I can be seated anywhere in a restaurant and not worry about. I can get out of my car door without having to park at the far end of the car park. I could go on and on!

SilenceInside · 15/04/2026 20:52

It's not gloating! It's fascinating to notice all the odd little things that are different after a significant weight loss, and sometimes they are totally unexpected.

I worried a lot about various parts of my body, until I realised it was just my skeleton.... It hasn't been visible or touchable for a long time.

And my armpits are now actually pits, as in hollow. That is very weird. I also had skin tags in my armpits that have just disappeared as well.

I lost 12 stone but still can’t get up easily off the floor 🙈 I wonder why that is?

I can get up off the sofa easier, I love going for long walks now, I’m so much more confident. And I can think of things other than food now too. Don’t get me wrong I’ll always love food and I probably have more food Boise than a lot of other people still, but no where near what I used to be like.

Helpmechooseausername · 15/04/2026 21:09

Getting into my car when it's parked next to another car! And also feeling your own bones! I really like my hip bones in particular!!

I guess the downside is the saggy skin! My upper legs are not a pretty sight! But I'll take that!

Would anyone object me telling a success story of the other way, small to muscular (20kg weight gain)? As I'm someone who always struggled to gain weight and have a story to tell if anyone is interested

YelramBob · 15/04/2026 21:20

Well done on the 30kg! I lost 25kg, I know what you mean about being able to slide not squeeze into your car 😅

I posted this on a similar thread recently but I love having my photo taken now, instead of having to hide at the back.

I am!!

Dontknowwhattobelieve2 · 15/04/2026 21:22

I tell you what a I can’t do.. get bloody warm!

Crossing the legs is a big one, whenever I’m sat my legs are crossed. Sitting comfortably on public transport, without either spilling into the aisle or being squished into the window.

I'm interested, we never hear this side 😊

Yes, I'm interested too! I've not really thought about how we feel in our new bodies, irrespective of why they are different. Do tell!

I can now reach the cord for the blind in the kitchen as my belly doesn’t get in the way anymore. I’ve also noticed my skin tags have disappeared!

Helpmechooseausername · 15/04/2026 21:39

I'm freezing all the time too! Still in several layers all day!

Still can't run though!

I did it the boring way dropped 2 stone.
I can now feel my ribs see my fanny and walk up stairs without needing more air.

Yes! Mine is that I can do the washing up without getting a wet tummy because it doesn't touch the side of the sink anymore!

Ah yes, I can reach the top shelf in my kitchen, previously my belly got in the way. And the steering wheel in the car now has plenty of clearance even though I’m on the closest seat setting.

I run but still can't run well, remember that episode of Friends when Phoebe tried to run? 😰

Oh yeah, when we bought our car just over a year ago I had permanent bruises across my thighs. Now there’s a gap!

DisplayPurposesOnly · 16/04/2026 14:25

It's been a year but I'm still freaked when I kneel down and sit back on my heels - I do now sit on them, and it feels completely alien (have i sat on someone else???) 😂

elliejjtiny · 16/04/2026 15:04

Following. I've gone from 22st down to 18st but still haven't noticed any difference apart from my clothes being looser.

MumAsYouAre · 16/04/2026 15:06

Wear trousers! I used to live in dresses but now I have the confidence for jeans and trousers every day.

This is me! I could never do this and it’s still weird. Also agree that my pits are now pits and about being bloody freezing all the time! I can go for a walk without getting horribly warm and sweaty and complete a Pilates class without being out of breath

Laiste · 16/04/2026 15:23

Feel my hip bones (slightly) through my clothes when my arms hang down.
