Having experienced both OA of the TMJ and impacted and infected wisdom teeth, I'm struggling to understand how you would know the difference. The pain from one always refers out to the other, ime.

What exactly do you mean by a flare in your TMJ?

Do you have polymyalgia rheumatica or rheumatoid arthritis?

No I don’t have either! I’ve had tmj on my right side and last week my left side went and had routine dentist appointment where he said wisdom tooth on top on that side was inflamed! Pain got worse so he’s got me on antibiotics now until he sees me on Friday!

Both my bottom wisdom teeth are impacted, and I've had TMJ flareups since I was 17.

I've never considered they might be connected so thank you so much for planting that seed!

It could be the teeth, it's all so close together that if the nerve in that area gets upset it's really pretty impossible to tell what's what! I've got no wisdom teeth now, so it's more obviously my jaw arthritis.

Slight derail, I had trigeminal neuralgia on one side for about 4yrs until I had my wisdom teeth on thst side removed. Came round from GA and it had totally gone, never to reappear.

Yes. A TMJ flare when I was in my late teens caused my dentist to remove all my four impacted wisdom teeth. Did a wash out of the cartilage too but it is still as issue.

I’m now using a bite guard that is aligning my jaw as well as occasional Botox - these have been very effective.
