Should hallway / stair carpet match throughout or be darker and harder wearing at the entrance?

I am in a rental property, private. The landlord is finally replacing the awful hall carpet, but of course, it will be low quality rental carpet.

Someone came today to measure up from the shop, and said he was going to suggest a different colour for the front porch / hallway, and a different type of hard wearing carpet. A much darker colour and different style to the rest.

I am worried this is going to look awful. I know it's only a rental but I've been here years!

Is this a thing? Should I go for the same carpet in the bottom hallway? Or with his suggestion.

Also colour. He suggested a mid grey, which I am not totally opposed to, but I am also thinking perhaps a darker charcoal might look tidier and last longer? It would also match the lounge. He made the point that darker carpets can also show up more dirt and specks. But I'm unsure.

Would welcome any knowledge of carpets! I have a little say in this.

I don't have a knowledge of carpets OP but I have an interest in your thread because the carpet I currently have in the downstairs hall, on the stairs and on the top landing is badly in need of replacing . It was there when I bought the house.

I must say it has never even crossed my mind to have a different colour in the downstairs hall from that on the stairs. Personally I would think that would look pretty ridiculous.

The carpet I have currently is a darkish grey with a black fleck on it. The fleck means it disguises any dirt and stains. My previous home had a lovely plain cinnamon coloured carpet on the stair and top landing but as the staircase was in my living room there was no hallway and the living room floor was wood. The carpet was plain and was a bit of a nightmare as regards needing very regular hoovering .

I'm still thinking about what to do with my current hall and stair carpet but will probably go for a mid to darkish brown colour choice, but definitely all the same colour.

I've got coir matting across the entrance way which works really well (although now 10+ years old and could do with replacing).

When we had our kitchen done we put wood floor through kitchen into the small entrance to the house then charcoal grey carpet up the stairs, looks great.

So we think charcoal grey vs the mid grey would work better? I am inclined to agree to an extent as a hallway has so much traffic. That said it would darken the atmosphere quite a lot! But I think it would look smarter in general.

Would welcome others thoughts thank you all!

Our house came with hardwearing (like doormat type texture) carpet in the hallway in a charcoaly colour and then blue carpet up the stairs and on the top floor. When we get round to replacing it I’ll be doing the same thing as it’s a godsend for wet muddy boots etc, it’s so hardwearing and not too hard on your feet either.

I’m not a fan of grey, or carpet, but I would definitely go for a darker charcoal grey if those were my options!
