Hey! Have just been prescribed amoxicillin for wisdom tooth infection? Anyone know how long they will take to work 🙈

When I have had antibiotics for a tooth infection it normally improved after 24 hrs. Probably most improvement between 24 and 48hrs. Are you in pain? I found the only thing that would touch tooth pain was ibuprofen and codeine. You can get it at the pharmacy, but they will advise you to only take it for a few days as it can be addictive. That might be enough to see you through the worse if you are able to take it.

Sometimes can improve by second or third dose, if not then by the next day. Hope you're not on too much pain. I'm currently on antibiotics for a dental abscess

You may need a different antibiotic that works on different bacteria. Metronidazole.

Amoxicillin didn’t work I needed a stronger antibiotic

Highlighta · 15/04/2026 06:30

I'm also in antibiotics for a dental infection, but I have two antibiotics Amoxcyllin and Metrodizanale

I started on Monday evening and have just a niggle this morning.

I'm on phenyloxymethylpenicillin potassium. I thought it sounded strong, I did have massive swelling in my face and in my sinus there's a big lump. It's still slowly going down after several days, but it helped with the pain within a few doses

Seconded. I had a struggle getting any antibiotics some years back, then nothing would touch the infection but Metronidazole. Too late then and I lost a perfectly healthy molar.

I had amoxicillin last year for a wisdom tooth infection and it was noticeably better about 48 hours after the first dose.

BashfulClam · 15/04/2026 12:06

Yeah I had metronidazole. Use warm salt water rinses several times a day and really swish. Especially after eating.

Metronidazole is evil if you have any underlying neurological conditions (and sometimes even if you don't)

Amoxicillin took a couple of days to take hold but I had a huge root abscess. After that it worked well.

Not great for the stomach either, as I am well finding out. But to be fair I didn't eat prior, which is written on a bright neon sticker.

Yeah it should start easing off as soon as you start taking them, so on day one. But if it's particularly grim it might take longer to feel like it's shifting.

Take plenty of pain relief and rinse with chlorhexidine mouthwash fairly often. I hope it gets better soon x

Thanks everybody! I’m 24 hours in and no improvement just yet! My tmj is acting up too I think so don’t know which is the bigger culprit! We are away at the weekend so really hoping something kicks in by then 🙈
