Is this a Facebook glitch re: inconsistencies in who appears on friends lists?

Can someone explain this to me please, it's about Facebook friends.

Made up names to try and make it easier ...

I'm fb friends with Steve and can see his entire list of friends, not just mutuals.
Jack and Diane used to be in his list of friends but they're no longer there.

However, if I look on Jack's list of friend Steve is there and if I go on Diane's list of friends he's also there.

Surely you're either friends or not ie. if Steve unfollowed/unfriended them then they wouldn't still be friends /following him??

Or can you hide individual friends in your friend list?

I think there is a privacy setting which allows Jack And Diane to conceal themselves in other people's friend lists. At the same time, they can allow their own friend list to be entirely visible, hence you being able to see Steve who hasn't toggled this setting to conceal himself like they have.

This is probably a mistake on their part and they want to conceal themselves everywhere, or maybe the settings became more nuanced and they haven't changed them recently.

Ah ok, thank you, that's interesting, I didn't realise you could do that.

They definitely used to be visible in Steve's friends list so they must have changed it for some reason.

My guess is that they were trying to change how things look on their page but changed how it looks on other people's page.
