Has anyone sold their car by sticking it on the road with a "For Sale" sign?

We need to sell our ancient car. It runs really well, has done less than 100k but is nearly 20 years old. Garages aren't interested and we've already bought another (ancient!) car so we don't need a part exchange.

We live on quite a busy road but with loads of on-street parking as all the houses are detached with large driveways, so there are very rarely any cars parked near our house. I've suggested to DH that we stick it outside with a sign in the windscreen but he thinks that's a waste of time. He wants to advertise it on FB market place instead

Has anyone ever stuck their car on the road with a "For Sale" sign, and if so did you get a sale that way?

What is it?

Firetreev · 15/04/2026 07:36

Yes, and I live out in the sticks. It was bought in a few days. Very quick and easy

Theimpossiblegirl · 15/04/2026 12:32

Yes, sold a small ideal first car the same day. Also put a tent up in my front garden with a for sale sign and that was snapped up. I live quite rurally so I was pleasantly surprised.

Try advertising it in the local newspaper too on their for sale page

We normally buy our vehicles from roadside ads. My OH travels around abit and often comes across cars for sale on the side of the road. He knows what he's doing though when it comes to vehicles and their condition so we don't normally get burned.

If he wants to put it on FB why not just let him crack on with that?

WallaceinAnderland · 15/04/2026 12:42

DD popped her Mazda in the road out front with a for sale sign and it was sold within days. Very effective and easy way to sell. Worth a try I would say.

Poppingby · 15/04/2026 12:44

Try it! But check your local bylaws as it's illegal to do this on some roads round here. Don't really know why mind.

Chatsbots · 15/04/2026 12:57

Yes. I put a sign on the car saying it needed rehoming.

Also used Gumtree, Owner's Groups and FB groups over the years. Also accosting a neighbour's tradesman and asking if he needed a new van!

Pretty much everything works.

brunetteorblonde · 15/04/2026 15:52

I did. It sold really quickly, no harm in trying for a bit and if doesn't shift use other methods.

Can you share a pic or what it is? I’m super intrigued. Sounds like it will sell quickly in the right environment

No. Our council won’t allow it.

Sunshineandoranges · 15/04/2026 16:21

A friend found Motorway very good. We found the offer from webuyanycar for our previous car too low.

Don't get too excited but here it is.

We bought it years ago as the DC were older teenagers, and it was the only convertible DH could find that could genuinely fit 4 adults comfortably. It's a BMW 320 M Sport, according to DH it handles amazingly. I hardly ever drive it as I much prefer my car!

Lovely cars they are that’s for sure!

bet you are no where near me in the country or I would snap that up!

AnnaQuayRules · 15/04/2026 22:03

@dadtoateen we are in East Anglia - if you are as well, come and take a look!

That is (and I cannot stress this enough) to die for! I would also snap that up if I didn’t have company cars. When I lose my job, that is the exact car I would look to buy.

Funnily enough, we met up with DFIL tonight who is selling a coupe version of the same car in bright red. Apparently, we buy any car won’t even quote online and the garages they are looking to purchase from are offering £400.
