What recommendations do you have? I've been looking at Montenegro and then also Belgrade in Serbia and it seems even accommodation is super cheap and affordable for a weeks holiday.

Oh I’m interested in this. Albania? Maybe?Tirana looks very interesting

Stewirs · 13/04/2026 11:44

I was just looking at how affordable even the accommodation is

Albania intrigues me, though even within the eu there’s better deals to be had, just booked a lodge (sleeps 4) on a lake for 5 days in Finland for £289, booze is expensive but food in similar to the uk eating out

Are you trying to avoid EES?

Bjorkdidit · 13/04/2026 12:13

Iceland, but it's not super cheap, far from it.

Poland is in the EU but hotels, eating out, public transport and attractions are all quite a bit cheaper than the UK. Public toilets are surprisingly expensive though, seem to be equivalent to 40 - 80 p, but I can live with that.

The EES was fine though, most people arriving on the flights I was on had Polish passports, so smaller amounts of people needing to go through the non EU queue.

No not at all. Just cheap accommodation

Ah, you might just be better off specifying that with a rough budget as your requirement. Not all EU/Schengen countries are expensive, you could be discounting some countries unintentionally.

I'm guessing Switzerland is off the list then!

I've been to both and apart from cheap but quite luxurious accommodation, food is amazing (both prices and quality). People are very kind and willing to help and what I found also to be great is that everyone speaks English at quite good level. There is a lot to see and entertainment is also something to talk about. Haven't been to Albania but some of my friends visited and the feedback was 1) not so safe and 2) communication in English is a problem

Bulgaria is in the EU, but I got a lovely little studio for me and 2 DC in the old town of Veliko Tarnovo for about £38 a night last year.
