What minor things does your partner do that quietly annoy you?

This is a lighthearted thread inspired by a similar topic on another forum. I found that I resonated with so many of them.

What things does your partner do that your find annoying, but not so much to make a big fuss about.

A couple of mine (there are more 😃) that DH does are washing his plate after a meal, but leaving the cutlery he used in the sink.

Another is talking to me from another room our upstairs.. and somehow getting upset when I say I can't hear him

Never plumps the pillows when he makes the bed, same with cushions downstairs which are never plumped or put back in place at bedtime.

always, despite being told, puts the egg slicer in the wrong drawer.

mispronounces words currently saying Domineek republic instead of Dominican.

God, life is definitely too short to plump pillows.

Lobelia123 · 13/04/2026 13:24

Leaves wet towels on the bed. Pours a drink and then walks away leaving the drink bottle out on the counter instead of putting it away back in the fridge. Consequences of an over indulgent mother whose children were the centre of her life! Luckily pretty good in other depts or I would have to lay a new patio.

ToadRage · 13/04/2026 13:26

After using a baking tray, he puts in back in the oven rather than putting it in the sink or dishwasher. It invariably gets left there meaning it never gets washed.

He doesn't believe putting away washing is a real job, I can't do a whole lot of housework cos of my disability but laundry is one thing I can do, so if he asks me what i have done today and I say a put away the washing, to him that means I've done nothing. When he can't find an item of clothing he doesn't imagine that it might have been put away. when we first lived together he was running around one morning cos he couldn't find any of his shirts, he hadn't thought to look in the wardrobe. He couldn't find his jeans this weekend, they were in his drawer, god knows where he thinks his supply of clean boxers is coming from!

Sunloungerhogger · 13/04/2026 13:27

Ah, mine does the locking all doors immediately thing, see also closing them and/or turning off lights (and sometimes saying pointedly have you finished in there?) - the answer is no, I have not finished! That’s why the door is still open/light still on because I’m in the middle of doing x y z!

has a habit of saying I’ve emptied the dishwasher / taken the rubbish out etc - leaves me thinking that’s nice dear, would you like a medal? Shall I tell you all the things I’ve done?!

shouts / talks to me from other parts of the house, but then gets annoyed and says he can’t hear me if I do the same….

Sunloungerhogger · 13/04/2026 13:28

Oh also has a habit of saying where is my / I can’t find my…..as if it’s somehow my fault / me that has moved whatever of his or put it away in the wrong place.

Sortingmyself · 13/04/2026 13:35

I can relate to so many of these but the one thing that drives me absolutely potty is the 'tidying up' behind me when I'm still using/about to use an item. The other day, I used a knife to pierce the tape on a delivery box. I always do this and leave the knife on the side, next to me, to re-use it for piercing the tape on the underside of the box so that I can lie it flat for re-cycling...I opened the box, took out the contents, sorted through them and went to pick up the knife to dismantle the delivery box only to find empty space.

He had walked up beside me, taken it, washed it up, put it away and walked off again without me noticing in the space of about 30 seconds. He's the same when I'm cooking...whipping the chopping board/knife/bowl away from me before I've even had chance to use it. Gaaaahhhhhh.......

benten54 · 13/04/2026 13:42

Is dishwasher police.

Yet at the same time he is unable to actually put things in the empty dishwasher.
Had a sandwich? Leave plate and buttery knife next to the sink!
Cooking? Leave everything littered on the worktops or pile it on the sink!
Empying the dishwasher? Don’t put it in the cupboard or drawer it belongs in. Stack the clean stuff above the drawer or cabinet it belongs in claiming ‘it’s drying’. This is great because then you mix up the clean and dirty stuff ……

Eats pasta off a fork using his teeth.

Im bemused at the amount of egg slicing you must do to notice the machine goes in the wrong drawer. Ditto pillow plumping!

Starts new hobbies all the time.

But buys the shittist version of each item he might need making it just unpleasant to do, so he gives up and then 2 months later tries a new thing
He tries to be too frugal with it all but it all ends up a complete waste of money

Examples being; bought a bike for £80
The frame is so heavy I cant actually move it. It has no gears and we live on a hill. I think he's ridden it twice. I suggested a lighter, geared version. I was being silly as everyone knows biking is easy - sure we were never off our bikes as kids

Joined a really cheap gym. But its about 10 miles away. With weird opening hours. Went a few times then got sick of getting up at 5 to go to the gym as it didnt open after work. Joined one 2 mins from our house for £5 more a month

There are multiple versions of this. Ive given up now.

TomatoSandwiches · 13/04/2026 17:08

We have one very longish sofa in our reading room and if I'm on one end he will plonk himself down a bit too harshly and then jiggle around to sit himself just as but I feel every little movement, jars my concentration, even the cats dislike it 😂 our girl meows at him in displeasure.

He also doesn't unroll his socks but I leave them if he hasn't so it's his problem but then the laundry basket nearly never is empty, which bothers me, but not enough to touch his socks!

RichPetuniaAgain · 13/04/2026 17:09

The most annoying habit that my ex did was … breathing 🤣. Really got on my nerves 😮😁.

GoldenCupsatHarvestTime · 13/04/2026 17:13

Yawns. Morning, noon and night he’s always fucking yawning. Proper unhinges his door like a snake. Winds me up.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 13/04/2026 17:26

I also have ADHD and live alone, but have learned not to leave cupboard doors open as I have cracked my skull so many times on the sharp edge of an upper door from having left it open. Can you not wait for your DHs to bend down, open a top cupboard door and wait for him to bash his skull? It only took a couple of times for me to now close doors like a maniac.

But I am endlessly amused by listening to all of these - carry on...

pepayfelix · 13/04/2026 21:11

Grunting, groaning, sighing, saying “Jesus Christ!” all the time. He sounds like a bad actor on the Archers, doing OTT sound effects every time he has to heave his body out of a chair or switch the kettle on.

starryeyed19 · 13/04/2026 21:13

He eats really noisily. I cannot bear it. He’s such a stickler for manners too so I cannot understand why he eats like that. I actually can’t bear in the same room with him if he’s having a soft boiled egg for breakfast.

elliesmummy19 · 13/04/2026 21:33

Leaving every light on in the house. Drives me BONKERS!

ToadRage · 13/04/2026 23:11

I have another but I feel bad cos why his does this is sort linked to his autism. He will start a hobby, get really into it, spend a fortune buying all the gear then just randomly stop with no warning. A few years back he started playing bowls, bought the all white uniform, some proper bowls shoes and his own set of bowls plus bag. He would go out every night to play on the green, he even played a couple of league games when they needed an extra person, then one day he just stopped going and never played again. The same happened with running, he joined a club, bought an expensive sportswear, ran with them, did parkrun on the weekends (he even got me doing that) and went out for a run most evenings, now he never runs.

Devilsmommy · 12/04/2026 19:05

At least yours leaves the crumbs on the worktop. I've actually stood there and watched mine sweep them to the floor and then it's like he thinks they disappear 😡 good job I 1 love him and 2 don't own a patio🤭

Sorry 😳

foodlovefood · 13/04/2026 23:37

Doesn’t empty bins. Squashes everything in or will put empty milk cart s back in the fridge as no room in the bin.

chews toffees very loudly.

MrsDeltaB · 13/04/2026 23:39

in some ways I’m fortunate that as he WFH he can chuck a wash load on each day. But. It’s literally chuck! No separation, no colours versus whites, no towel load. Just all in together! Will ram a load into the drum which is counter productive as a 3/4 load wash’s better!

agree with the hanging out to dry. We have an airer in the downstairs loo for anything that can’t be tumbled, but it’s dumped. Draped, no chance of drying properly never mind creases!

snores. Sleep apnea snores. I go from loving the bones of him to wanting to stab him in the neck with a fork!

HotRootsAndNaughtyToots · 13/04/2026 23:57

Turns lights off so neurotically it's like he thinks they're going to explode.

The landing light switch is really inconveniently located but if I'm in the bathroom or pottering about upstairs he'll turn it off all the bloody time leaving me stumbling around in the dark. One day I'll end up breaking a leg on the stairs!!

Tigerbalmshark · 14/04/2026 00:01

Spreads Nutella with a SPOON, and then puts the spoon full of Nutella in the dishwasher, which clearly can’t wash off an entire spoonful of chocolate spread before the drying cycle starts. So I just get a spoon full of baked-on Nutella coming out of the machine in the morning.

DS would happily lick the spoon clean for him given the opportunity. Or he could use a knife like a normal person.

begonefoulclutter · 14/04/2026 00:52

Leaving used dental floss on the bathroom windowsill.

When he gets up off the sofa and walks off, he leaves the cushions in absolute shambolic disarray. It looks like they have been wrestled into submission by a flange of gorillas.

The unnatural obsession with bins and recycling, and the even more unnatural obsession with describing the procedure to me at length.

The continued purchasing of cat food that the cats don't particularly like, and then complaining when they don't eat the stuff.

Putting fruit in the fruit bowl without taking it out of the bag it came in first.

Having a large number of friends, all of whom appear to be called either Dave or Chris. He will then talk to me about 'Dave' or 'Chris', and expect me to know which one he's on about (names have been changed to protect the innocent).

JohnTheRevelator · 14/04/2026 01:09

thenightsky · 12/04/2026 19:02

Leaves all the kitchen cupboard doors wide open after emptying the dishwasher.
Leaves the wardrobe doors wide open so my jumpers get eaten by moths.
Leaves crumbs all over the worktop.
Leaves streaks of tea down the wall next to the bin when chucking away teabags.
Gets distracted laughing at stupid AI shit on FB so the dinner he's promised to produce burns to fuck.

I hate to tell you this, but closing the wardrobe doors won't keep clothes moths out! They are tiny fuckers, about 5 mm long so can get in through the smallest gap!

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 14/04/2026 01:09

Mine does this. Often, he's not only in the wrong room, but facing the wrong way as well. Or he's shouting into a cupboard. 😂

I wish he wouldn't leave dirty mugs everywhere.

On the plus side, he finally seems to have stopped taking dishes out of the oven with his bare hands, swearing, then dropping them on the floor.
