Radio DJs banal chit chat

Do you like radio DJ's chit chat? I obviously could turn the radio off, but I was with a client this morning so it wasn't my place to do so, but my goodness, the chit chat is so banal and tedious. Is it just me!? I do wonder if there is something wrong with me that I don't enjoy what most people seem to enjoy, but do they? Or are we just conditioned to think the banal chit chat is what radio DJs are for?

I know it’s a different type of radio, but I keep having to turn off Times Radio (recommended on MN as an alternative to Radio 4) because of the constant ‘um….er……well….aaaaaaaaaaah……ooooof…..um……’ gibbering by journalists who are supposed to be professional communicators. Fucking well just spit out what you want to say, or shut up!!

Plus some of their presenters have very ‘wet’ sounding voices - I can hear how dribbly and jowly they are and don’t like hearing all that saliva-swishing about.

Fills me with rage, it does.

I hate posts like this.

Oh I’m so old and grumpy and I don’t like people. Gosh, it must be just me that doesn’t get it. I’m the oooonnnly one.

2 seconds in someone mentions Terry Wogan or similar and it’s Oh Yes! I doooo get it.

What’s the fucking point? So fake.

I think TW was in a different class though to the banal inanity of the present crop of radio people we have now. He felt intelligent and considered, to me. I am actually possibly a little younger than the impression I am giving here, as I didn't particularly tune in to him, my parents did, but I could see the appeal and he didn't bother me. The guy I was stuck having to endure was blethering on about how obsessed he is with the mission around the moon, he droned on and on for ages about it, like he was an expert, and then gave us some little tidbits of trivia that were also very dull. Then there's requesting people message in with dull life info, and it's just a waste of my ear time. Who cares what Sally from Surbiton had for breakfast!

I don’t like it either but totally get why people do, lots of people love discussion, debate, constant chat. But my brain finds it annoying so I don’t listen

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 13/04/2026 15:11

My DB was a radio DJ for a short while. This was a bit ago, but he was told to avoid 'dead air', so when music wasn't playing he basically had to talk. And sitting alone in a studio he entered a sort of 'stream of conciousness' stuff which could be very funny to listen to, but was often a little bit self-centred and rambling. But it meant that they didn't have to play continuous music, which didn't allow for the time beats and the break ins for traffic announcements and news etc, so it was easier to have someone talking.

I remember laughing at his weather forecasts though, which basically consisted of sending someone outside to see if it was raining...

Well you’re obviously not going to like every radio presenter.

Its the faux, I’m so different, I’m old and grumpy and everyone else is so low brow and banal 🙄

I find that more inane than most radio presenters.

YellowRoom · 13/04/2026 16:04

I used to really enjoy 6 music but after re-sceduling/some faves leaving and then the nail in the coffin - the obsession with 'queer' I rarely listen now.

So we've got - blokes name - in. They hated they's body so much they chopped off some healthy body parts. What a fantastic role-model! Now lets listen to they sing a mournful song about how shit they's life was and how they is now overflowing with queer joy.

Toomanysocksonthedancefloor · 13/04/2026 16:11

The only thing I hate is the constant reference to "bangers"

Bangers this, bangers that! Even worse when they're "absolute bangers"

I had to ban my teens from anything like this in the car 😂

I used to love BBC 6 Music but every time they talk about John Peel it made me nauseous! They idolise him. 🤢

(I am hoping someone will tell me this is better now so I can give them another chance!)

I like a bit of Bush and Richie[s hometime show on Absolute Radio. They entertain me.

dailyconniptions · 13/04/2026 17:24

I like listening to nicely spoken presenters who don't yak shite and don't say things like 'I'm sat...' or 'free fousand...' They're few and far between though, sadly.

“Yak shite”?

Sweetpea333 · 13/04/2026 17:28

Sara Cox is horrendous for this. I can't abide Rylan who is beyond narcissistic or Sally Traffic. Just horrible.

StephensLass1977 · 13/04/2026 17:35

Nope, not since Tony Blackburn in the early 80s on Radio 1 when I was very young, or Pat and Mick / Richard Allinson / David Kid Jensen on 90s Capital Radio have I had much tolerance for radio DJs.

Used to also love Chris Tarrant and Kara on Capital Radio's Breakfast Show in the early 90s as a schoolgirl.

Those today just make it all about themselves.

😀 As in talk rubbish, not a large mammal's faeces!! 😀

ScaredOfFlying · 13/04/2026 17:53

I spend a lot of time listening to Radio 4 and serious podcasts. However, I have a bit of a soft spot for Amanda Holden and Jamie Theakston on Heart Breakfast, which we listen to on the school run because DS is too young for Serious Radio. Being a good DJ is an underrated skill. Kelly Brook is good at it too.

My husband’s pet hate is when Elaine Paige reads out the “comedy on-stage mishaps” that people send in to her Radio 2 Musicals show, if it was possible to die from cringing he would.

I grew up with Simon Mayo and the Radio 1 Breakfast Crew, True Confessions was a favourite. I think they were a more palatable version of that “gang” concept (which was novel in the late 80s)than Steve Wright In the Afternoon. Generally it helps if they have a recurring format item to anchor things around instead of just chat. Though Batesy’s Our Tune was always dire.

I prefer it when they don’t really talk about the songs. Smashie and Nicey anyone?

ScaredOfFlying · 13/04/2026 17:55

I’d still rather have banal music show chat than the utter Daily Mail Comments On Air shit that is Jeremy Vine or LBC. I always forget that crap exists unless I get in a taxi.

billysboy · 13/04/2026 18:01

The traffic bloke on r2 is the definition of thrush himself , bbc is desperate for him to be a star

We've come here to moan to like-minded people, so we are hardly pretending we are 'the only one'. In fact, I've never come across anyone in real life who likes the kind of chat we're talking about here, I find myself wondering if anyone likes it, or if it's a massive misapprehension on the part of the radio networks.

Thank you - yes, this rather explains my position. I know we are all different, but I really don't understand who could like that style of radio chat. It's SO dull, and me me me. It also just sounds so false.

Aw I miss Steve Wright. Admittedly the non stop oldies was my favourite bit.

Sorry I must’ve misunderstood the “is it just me?” 🙄😂

Surely it’s obvious by the sheer amount of radio content available that they are catering for all different types of people. And yes, some people enjoy chatter they can switch off to as background noise. Some people might take comfort in the day to day.

No need to criticise them with a faux “Oh I’m a grumpy old so and so, it’s just me but oooh it’s all so incredibly banal”. More boring than radio 4 🥱

Amanda Holden on Heart makes me want to shoot myself so I don’t listen to it. I enjoy LBC but have to switch the adverts off, they irritate me far more than any talking does.

The Amanda Holden fake laugh makes me immediately switch off

pinotnow · 13/04/2026 22:34

I hate this so much. I mainly listen to R4 which isn't too bad for inane chat, aside from Today presenters and their 'banter' with the sports one or commenting how they have to get up at 4am. But in the car I get the local traffic updates and it cuts in with irritating pounding urgent -sounding music and half the time it just carries on like that while the presenter recovers from apparently pissing herself laughing at the most hilarious joke that has ever been told - so what feels like hours of her going 'aaaaarrrrhhhhhuhhh!' while the music pounds on. Annoying as fuck but I can't work out how to disable it.
