Radio DJs banal chit chat

CribbagePatch · 11/04/2026 11:25

Do you like radio DJ's chit chat? I obviously could turn the radio off, but I was with a client this morning so it wasn't my place to do so, but my goodness, the chit chat is so banal and tedious. Is it just me!? I do wonder if there is something wrong with me that I don't enjoy what most people seem to enjoy, but do they? Or are we just conditioned to think the banal chit chat is what radio DJs are for?

Unfortunately @CribbagePatch two things are at play (and probably more than two). Firstly, we are not the target market any longer. I too was a Terry Wogan fan, but radio isn't the same now.

Secondly, they cater to the masses, who apparently want all that stuff. It's akin to the scheduled TV offering reality programmes, Strictly Come Dancing, Britain's Got no Talent etc which are of no interest to me, but have plenty of viewers it seems.

Streaming does appear to be the only option for the likes of us these days.

DeepFriedCreamEgg · 11/04/2026 12:47

Oh my god I hate it. And more so when they do things like Saturday afternoon calls in where people say what their upto ooo Clive is having a BBQ and Patricia is putting her feet up. No thanks.

Ha! Actually this is what tipped me over the edge today! They were doing a segment where people were just saying what they were doing today - going ti the gym, laundry, shopping - I mean, Just. So. Pedestrian. BORING.

I think you might be right. I haven't listened to the talky radio stations in ages, it was only because I had no choice today, and it felt like an assault on my senses.

But if they don’t chit chat it would just really be back to back music which we can use streaming platforms for.
I have to like the dj to like the chatter. I’m no longer a radio one fan because to me they talk rubbish. Romesh can do no wrong on radio 2 😁

A woman on the the mid morning radio one show constantly laughs and its absolutely awful to listen to

CribbagePatch · 11/04/2026 14:01

Potage · 11/04/2026 13:23

I also listen a bit behind so I can fast forward the ads - now those really, really, annoy me!

Genius!

Yes I'm the same.
I'll even go on the radio X app and click on a random show from earlier in the day and fast forward chat and adverts.
I refuse to listen to Chris Moyles and Toby Tarrent. I can manage Johnny Vaughan with the fast forward button near by

DeepFriedCreamEgg · 11/04/2026 15:19

Oh adverts! Especially on local radio stations. Fred's garage etc where Mavis is doing the advert in the "local" accent which is very much a awful version.

Somebody else who can't bare moyles? He does my nut.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 11/04/2026 15:24

It's awful isn't it. I feel like they forget it's meant to entertaining.

purplecorkheart · 11/04/2026 15:30

I listen to a channel in Ireland called Newstalk. I enjoy it as they interview different people on a variety of topics. Sometimes I listen to a different channel called Classic Hits but some of the DJs annoy me a bit. There is one that repeats herself constantly. I do not care about the amount the bird droppings you saw on your walk the first time, I do not need to hear about it every hour of your show. I guess though it is hard to come up with topic to talk to yourself about on an easy listen show.

MNLurker1345 · 11/04/2026 15:43

I only used to listen to this type of radio when driving but have now stopped and prefer silence or a podcast.

The fake, over emphasised accents, infantile voices and the volume, they are nearly shouting. They must find it exhausting.

Imagine if they spoke in the same way with friends and family. Maybe they do!

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 11/04/2026 15:44

This is why I don't listen to the radio

RaraRachael · 11/04/2026 15:54

I hate it. I want to listen to music, not talking.

I tuned in to Radio 2 several times this morning. Not once did I hear music - just endless yapping away.

This is why generally don't too! But today was foisted upon me (and for the last few weeks, actually, same station, same dull Dj, same dull chit chat).

It does my head in!

Monthlymonster · 11/04/2026 23:10

I think I need to sample a few radio stations to find a presenter I like.

I used to love Greg James but went right off him as too many in jokes and nonsense.

The station we listen to at work (a local one) is terrible. Talking about boiling eggs etc last week! Kate on Smooth as well, just talks utter rubbish.

I hate the repetition of it all too. They’ll say something, play a song then basically say exactly the same thing and keep doing it over and over.

MyLuckyHelper · 11/04/2026 23:12

I have an irrational hatred for one particular DJs chit chat. I find it so irritating I can’t stand it 🙈

He’s the stand in for the regular DJ in the station we listen to at work, so I don’t have to hear it that frequently, but every school holiday I get riled back up 😂😂

Yellowshirt · 12/04/2026 10:33

The bbc have also decided now that we all love the drivel the traffic reporters force us to listen to on radio 2 they can now also be TV presenters so Richie Anderson has started presenting homes under the hammer. Absolutely awful to listen to and now also watch

MundaneTuesdane · 12/04/2026 11:19

No, I absolutely can't stand it and switch to another station if there's too much talk. It's always such inane drivel.

I like the radio for music, as opposed to just playing what I have chosen via CD/streaming/whatever because I like the randomness of it, and hearing new things. But I want music, please, with minimal chat.

Yes this. I want to hear new music (well, not all the time, but when I do!), I just don't want boring me me me chat.

I love listening to the radio and only listen to stations with likeable djs like Absolute Radio an Greatest Hits.

Rarely there is a DJ I don't like so I change to another Absolute station.

Davros · 12/04/2026 22:56

If you’re in London, you need Robert Elms on BBC Radio London but he’s been reduced to three mornings only - Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Followed by Gary Crowley on Saturdays. Otherwise it’s Radio 4 or Magic Soul for me

Duckyfondant · 12/04/2026 23:04

My biggest bugbear is when the djs air themselves singing along to a bit of a song. The better the song the more annoying it is. Imagine the ego required to think people want to hear that!

Lilacspring · 13/04/2026 07:37

The only radio station I can listen to is classic fm,other stations annoy me because of the dj chat.

Spaghettea · 13/04/2026 07:42

Some of them are annoying but it's nice having "company" and hearing other people's voices.

A radio 1 music with radio 4 chat would be good. I can't bear old music so happily muddle through with radio 1 chat.
