Radio DJs banal chit chat

CribbagePatch · 11/04/2026 11:25

Do you like radio DJ's chit chat? I obviously could turn the radio off, but I was with a client this morning so it wasn't my place to do so, but my goodness, the chit chat is so banal and tedious. Is it just me!? I do wonder if there is something wrong with me that I don't enjoy what most people seem to enjoy, but do they? Or are we just conditioned to think the banal chit chat is what radio DJs are for?

Can’t stand it. Morning radio is particularly bad. If listening to music it’s usually a station without a DJ or one who only comes on very occasionally. As a teen though what I listened to was very much part of my identity so there were DJs I really liked (this was the dark ages before computers and the internet and SM).

Myblueclematis · 13/04/2026 08:27

I listed to Radio 2 weekday mornings from 9.30 and the chat has been getting worse over the last couple of years. Vernon Kay and his "team" really are annoying now. The voice notes are particularly irritating.

I expect Jeremy Vine to have lots of chat, that's the type of show he has but the rest need to play a bit more music and a lot less yakking.

notacooldad · 13/04/2026 08:30

The only dj chat I've ever liked was Mark and Lard years ago.
Unless it is a discussion/ chat show I'm not interested in dj chat at all.
Same with podcasts. I like true crime and generally if there is more than one host it is painful to listen to!

Just starting to worry i am getting miserable and antisocial in my old age!

You probably are but it's normal.
When im driving some of the teens I work with to school they want the local radio station on and the shite the djs are talking about at 07.30 is mind numbing!

TheAutumnCrow · 13/04/2026 08:39

Finally my dream has come true and Jenny Powell has moved to a nighttime slot, so that weekend mornings on Greatest Hits Radio are safe again from her Chat. There. For you. There. Yeah. Wow. And. Um. Here’s. A tune. For you. There.

She’s undoubtedly a perfectly nice person, but she really had delighted me long enough.

MundaneTuesdane · 13/04/2026 08:42

Yes, I am taking 'chat' to be the conversations about trivia that you get on radios 1 and 2 and most of the commercial stations. If it's an item on Radio 4, for instance, that's different - you don't tune into Radio 4 for music, you'd tune in specifically to listen to a serious and hopefully intelligent conversation about a topic that interested you. Radio 4 can be annoying in its own way, but you know what to expect from it.

Classic only ever has one presenter at a time, so the chat isn't extensive, and it's usually relevant, such as a fact about the composer they're about to play. They know their audience.

It's all this breakfast show 'today we're talking about our favourite burgers' utter idiocy, and phone ins: 'Anne from Croydon, tell me what you're up to this afternoon' yawnfests that have me instantly retuning.

angelos02 · 13/04/2026 08:43

I like Radio 1 even though I am a couple of decades beyond their target demographic. However I can't stand that they laugh hysterically at anything! It seems to be the same across media - chat shows, quiz shows, everything. I sit wondering what I've missed!

HoraceCope · 13/04/2026 08:45

i liked that traffic lady with Ken Bruce = Lynne Bowls
but Romesh and Sally have ruined this for me
i liked graham norton with maria mcerline - in fact i have discovered their podcast which is good.

My biggest bugbear is when the djs air themselves singing along to a bit of a song. The better the song the more annoying it is. Imagine the ego required to think people want to hear that!

I will never not be mystified by how popular Steve Wright's show used to be on Radio 2. It was absolutely full of shit like this, but loads of people lapped it up

I'm with you OP - I wish they would just play music and shut up. OJ Borj and Paddy McGuinness on Radio 2 are probably the worst I've heard for endless inanity

nopiesleftinthisvehicle · 13/04/2026 08:47

I can't bear the dedications from listeners on radio 2 😬

Sara Cox can't go a song without "Susan in Staines" telling the world how much she loves hubby, who is currently decorating their kitchen 😩

Usually some traumatic event in their marriage to garner greater sympathy..

Onefortheroad25 · 13/04/2026 08:47

I can’t stand it. Used to have 2FM on here in the mornings and the shite they used to talk was unreal. Laura Fox, Demi what’s her face and Carl Mullen were the absolute worst. Talking about their weekend, shrieking and shouting. Stupid competitions with wretched annoying kids. Making up songs etc. It was so bad. I do like the radio on though so I switched to RTE Radio 1 and it’s great. They still talk but they aren’t in pairs/groups so it’s much more civilised and mature. They talk about real things. They have interesting guests in sometimes too.

HoraceCope · 13/04/2026 08:50

steve wright's Janey lee grace was THE MOST annoying

EasterlyDirection · 13/04/2026 08:54

This is why I mainly only listen to Radio 4 and 5Live, then use spotify for music. But I miss hearing new music.

I couldn't stand Terry Wogan either.

RaraRachael · 13/04/2026 09:33

@EasterlyDirection I'm glad I'm not the only one who couldn't stand Terry Wogan.

Steve Wright was the absolute worst for singing along to songs. I thought his afternoon show was well past its sell by date.

I hate the Sunday Love Songs show regardless of who does it but that's because I don't like romantic ballads and soppy phone in chats.

NoraLuka · 13/04/2026 09:52

I don’t listen to the radio because of the chatting, stopped the minute streaming platforms became available!

Davros · 13/04/2026 10:49

My other suggestion is BBC Radio6 Music

I think you must be me!

I also disliked Steve and his Posse, I was working at the time and for the short 15-20 minute journey to work I would have it on purely for any road updates and time checks but used to shout "shut up" whenever he talked over a record which was quite often 🙄

Never been a fan of Tel, my mum and dad loved his radio show though.

Sunday Love Songs used to make me nauseous.

I listen to BB6 all weekend if the radio is on but switch to Virgin for Huey Morgan who now has a 4 hour slot Saturday and Sunday. Although it has adverts which is annoying.

Moulook31 · 13/04/2026 12:23

I rarely have the radio on because of all the chit chat. When driving I particularly find it irritating. Rather listen to my own thoughts.

RockaLock · 13/04/2026 12:35

I do agree that some of the R1 DJs can be intensely annoying now that I am (ahem) a few decades older than them.

But some I don’t mind too much, and on the plus side I do find that they sort of help me to keep up to date with what my teenage DS are talking about.

shellyleppard · 13/04/2026 12:37

Steve Wright on BBC 2 was brilliant. Now I don't listen to much radio

Dash1863 · 13/04/2026 12:48

Boom radio or Boom rock are the only two I listen to . DJ's who talk about the music ( and know their stuff ) along with a great mix of music .

notacooldad · 13/04/2026 12:50

He really wasn't.
He never shut up and talked over records.

SquashPenguin · 13/04/2026 12:55

Amanda Holden on Heart makes me want to shoot myself so I don’t listen to it. I enjoy LBC but have to switch the adverts off, they irritate me far more than any talking does.

latetothefisting · 13/04/2026 13:00

The most annoying is when they crack up laughing at something in the room or try to explain what someone is doing/happening - YOU ARE ON THE RADIO! We cant see you!
Radio 1 did a thing a few years back when the presenters were bungee jumping or something stupid and it was just several minutes of screaming!

You're supposed to be entertaining your RADIO audience not the other people in the studio with you.

CharlotteCollinsneeLucas · 13/04/2026 13:09

This is why I now listen to Radio 3 on the way to work. It's like Classic FM without the adverts - genius!
