Do you make birthday cakes for your children? Or did your mum make you one?

My mum never made me one, she had a few made for me - nothing crazy just like the woman down the street who would bake it and then place a Barbie on top.

But I’m just curious .. is it quite common for a mum to make a birthday cake?

My mum always did, she was very good at doing different shapes & decorations.

I always do, and they’re tasty, but I don’t have a knack for intricate decorations.

We make cakes, but not theme cakes. Just regular cake, scones, or dessert.

Echobelly · 10/04/2026 20:12

I made them when kids were smaller, but seldom ones that looked like something, as I'm rubbish at that. I can make cakes that taste nice, but I can't do anything that involves presentation skills or fancy icing.

My mum always made us cakes. I make them for my children every year.

No and no.

muggart · 10/04/2026 20:12

i do. my kid has allergies so i prefer making it at home. it would be awful for her to react to her own bday cake.

otherwise i wouldn’t. it’s a PITA.

Decacaffeinatednow · 10/04/2026 20:14

Dh has always made their birthday cakes.
As kids we my mum made us cakes every year.

TokenGinger · 10/04/2026 20:18

I bake my kids’ cake. I seem to have become quite an unintentional pro, too, as I appear
to be chief cake maker for all of my family and friends 🥴😂 So whilst I am a yes, there’s around 20 other mums who are a no, because I do it for them!

My mam hates cooking, let alone baking, and still does. But one year she made me the most amazing Superted birthday cake... but she had two rounds tins and one square. Round for the head, square for the body... and then John Wayne legs because they were curved with the second round tin. How much love she poured into that wonky cake because I loved Superted and she didn't have all of the stuff she needed... I don't have the words. I have a Polaroid of that cake on my fridge just to remind myself that there is such a thing as 'food as love'.

Chill1Heeler · 10/04/2026 20:20

I do, mainly because I enjoy it and im good at it, they get cakes that match the theme of their birthdays. If it wasnt a hobby of mine, I wouldnt hesitate to get one from the supermarket. My Mum never made our cakes (thank God, she really couldn't cook 😅)

Thelifeofawife · 10/04/2026 20:20

I’ve made birthday cakes for my DS and DSD, and sometimes they help with it. I don’t make professional type ones, but there has been some themes. I only do them for home though, if they have a party they get a professional one 😅

Oh sorry I’m not chronically online like you.

Also sometimes … just sometimes on a big forum topics might just get repeated. I know it’s shocking. But it does happen.

My children are older now and they make me a birthday cake rather than the other way round!

CatchHimDerry · 10/04/2026 20:22

I do, always curse this decision when I’m knee deep in crumbs and icing though

Booooooooom · 10/04/2026 20:23

I made for both of mine when they were little - I did have to learn how to do it (thank you Mary Berry!)

MouseCheese87 · 10/04/2026 20:24

No and no. I am a good cook but not a baker. My mum was neither.

properidiot · 10/04/2026 20:26

Yes my Mum always made our birthday cakes. I remember my clock birthday cake back in the 70s - I think it was for my 8th birthday - so it said 8 o'clock! I made cakes for both my children; Pokemon, Barbie, Spiderman, unicorn - I dread to think what my DD would have thought if I'd served her up a clock cake!

I now bake birthday cakes for my DGS. Such a special thing to do I think and they always taste so much better than the expensive shop bought cakes that are always a bit disappointing!

1990sMum · 10/04/2026 20:27

My dm has never made a cake in her life, I think she hasn't done me a cake since I was 12 or 13.

I get cakes made for all my 6 dc. Even though 4 are adults and 2 are married. Thats my thing.

Pollpoll · 10/04/2026 20:29

I made some quite good theme cakes when DC were little. A rocket, a clown and a bear. Once I made a number 7 cake, huge one covered in chocolate buttercream and chocolates. After that it was numbers every year.Number 12 was quite a challenge iirc.
I still make one for DS2 (28) but DS1 doesn't like cake now.

NotTheFreudYoureLookingFor · 10/04/2026 20:30

I think my mum made me one or two (but it's hard to remember... Never really had birthday parties). I've always made my kids cakes.

Retrogamer · 10/04/2026 20:34

My mum made our birthday cakes. She was quite creative with them and brings happy memories. Now I make my DC and my mum cakes every birthday.

I do, always curse this decision when I’m knee deep in crumbs and icing though

Likewise, high as a kite on inhaled icing sugar, regretting my life decisions.

Redeeming feature for me is I only have DD, so I had a year between birthdays to forget how horrendous making a themed cake is 😆 If I’d had two kids I’d have bowed out earlier.

weareallqueens · 10/04/2026 20:35

I do, but I buy toppers and stuff and they still look rubbish so only for the immediate family. Taste nice though. My mum always made one for me and my siblings.

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 10/04/2026 20:36

My mum never made me a birthday cake. I was never particularly bothered as I liked the cakes from the shop. I made my son’s first birthday cake but only because I was an anxious first time parent and I wanted it to be healthy and sugar free because he’d never really had junk food before. I didn’t make the cake for his second birthday and probably won’t this year. Baking is not something I really enjoy or feel I’m good at. Although if one of my children actually asked me to make their cake I would do it.
