New wheelchair

I got measured for a new wheelchair this week. It's going to cost £10,000. It's not top of the range or anything, I got assessed for what I need and that's the outcome. How the hell do I find that money? I work part time but for minimum wage. DH works a lot and pays for everything else. There's no NHS help as I can walk a little. I wish I could win the lottery. I would still be very ill but it certainly would help.

You buy what you can afford.

like me.

I bought a second hand one.

if you are eligible for high rate mobility on pip you can lease one using your pip.

most people who use wheelchairs can’t afford ten grand on them.

I've got my eyes on all the second hand sites. My previous ones have been second or third hand. If it still works I'm happy. Anything disability related they always add a zero to the price. It's crazy.

The power chairs are expensive. They are basically little cars. There are always loads going on eBay for under a grand and then you get it adapted as you can. You can actually usually get NHS help with posture care separately under aids and adaptations, and get a cushion supplied via tissue viability. Split it up into parts and you're more likely to get what you need.

Agree the wheelchair services have always been hopeless round our way. My late DH waited over a decade for a chair and he was fully quad. For a quadriplegic the chairs often start at thirty grand.
