I know everyone is different, but I wondered how the first few days of going on adhd meds was for your child? Just so I can prepare maybe a little of what to expect. Thanks!!

Loss of appetite and then ravenous hunger once they wear off.

Is he going on methylphenidate?

It took a week to a actually kick in, we started on methelphenidate. Make sure the school are reporting back as their observations will be useful for your consultant

Mine has only ever had it for school as the side effects are quite bad.
A ‘come down’ in the evening, grumpy etc.
Loss of appetite then really hungry.
Difficulty with sleeping.
That said, it’s been a game changer and we’ve stuck with it despite the challenges.

Sonolanona · 07/04/2026 22:16

You may see a bit of a rebound when the meds wear off.
Lack of appetite (DD1 went on them at 6 and was weighed regularly as she was and still is, skinny)
Absolute game changer for my daughter though, hope it works for your DS :)

In our experience, a bloody miracle!.....an inquisitive, non defiant, affable child! echo the appetite loss and certainly notice when it wears off. Good luck!

Thanks everyone. It’s Easter hols and not back to school until 20th, but we thought we’d start now so he can get used to it. And he has football camp next week and struggles so much to focus and listen, so hopefully see the benefits for that. DH is worried he’ll just be zoned out, but I think that’s an old fashioned view as that’s not been what I’ve been reading when researching. Will make sure he has a good breakfast if he might not eat much during the day.

You may not notice much change - DS started at a similar age. We noticed he could focus more on work, but he was very much himself. He can easily forget to eat meals, but he was always a bit like that anyway!

Notashamed13 · 07/04/2026 22:41

We always make sure of a good breakfast, you will be astounded I'm sure, focus from my dd literally goes up 💯 when shes medicated. We dont use it every day, school days being most prevalent.

MrsKateColumbo · 08/04/2026 17:45

We did actually experience the zone out, it definitely can happen- DS experienced it on two types of methelphenidate which is why we have the amphetamine now.

Hope it all goes well. Overall I agree - i wonderful miracle !

How did it go OP?

How did it go OP?

So he’s been on them for 3 weeks now. School have said they’ve really noticed a change, much more able to focus on his work etc. so that’s really positive.
only downside is he keeps getting really nauseous in the evening time. Does that wear off over time, or will he always have that? I get nausea when my IBS flares up, so I know how horrible he feels. Need to send a review to his adhd nurse tomorrow, so I’ll see what she says.
